91 firebird spedometer dead
I have a 91 firebird trans am gta, the spedometer is completely dead and will not move at all. I saw on the older models that a resister usually dies but mine doesn't look like it has the same board setup.
Any tips, tricks and common fixes before I start pulling the dash apart?

Hi gents,
Roorancher's video only details failed odometer drive gears. If PirateCopyu has both the odometer and the speedometer inoperative, the video will be no help to him.

I've been considering sending my cluster here to get fixed.

Plus I'm not 100% it is the cluster yet.

I agree, they seem a bit pricey. But are you trying to fix the issue or replace it with another used piece that may have another issue sooner than you think? I understand, a budget is a budget.

If it is the cluster I can fix it. Just wondering if anyone has done it before and has any tips before I get started. Specifically any common problems with this dash panel so I know where to start.
Re: 91 firebird spedometer dead
For one bit of "armchair diagnosis", I'll ask, does your car have cruise control, and is it presently working?
If yes, that means the VSS in your transmission is OK, and is not the reason for the inoperative speedometer. If no, it very well could be a VSS problem. Note that I did not say "it's the VSS that's dead", only that it COULD be a suspect if the cruise don't work.

The connectors on the back of the dash are always worth inspecting for spring tension and cleanliness. You can clean the contacts on the green screen and the connector terminals using pencil eraser.

Re: 91 firebird spedometer dead
You can find a download of the 88 Firebird service manual in the link below. It has troubleshooting procedures documented. I don't know what all changed by 91 but it will largely be the same. That might help you confirm whether the speedometer is the culprit and worth going after for repair.
