Alternator Issue

The alternator on my 90 is getting very hot, too hot.
I rebuilt the alternator and replaced the starter with a mini starter from power master at the same time.
I started to diagnose the issue by disconnecting all the wires from the alt. and running the engine. Alt. is running cool.
Checked wires for a short and didn't find any .
Continuity tested starter and found continuity between purple wire connection and starter / ground. Not sure if this is normal.

Not sure were to go from here?

You're "measuring" the resistance of the solenoid, which is VERY low. Like, a tenth of an ohm or less. So yeah, pretty much looks like continuity, to a typical meter. It's not energized except when you turn the key to start, so, not a problem, much less The Problem.

Good place to start would be, check the voltage the alt is delivering. Should be low 14s, like 14.1 to 14.3 or thereabouts, between the case and the Big Red Terminal while running, a minute or 2 after starting. If it's higher than that, the alt is overcharging, and The Problem is, your rebuild went sideways somehow. Once that's OK then check the voltage across the batt terminals at the same time. If that's more than a few tenths lower, the batt is probably bad; specifically, it has a shorted cell.

Re: Alternator Issue

Battery tests good but alt. is all over the place.
I must have done something wrong during the rebuilding.
Ordered a new one as I don’t have time now to figure out what is wrong.

Thanks Sofalingdom for time and expertise

Re: Alternator Issue

New AC Delco alt. is reading 14.65 volts and battery tester reads high voltage.

Re: Alternator Issue

14.65 does seem high, but not outrageously so. Keep in mind, it also changes with temperature (gets lower as the alt heats up).

What's the voltage at the batt terminals? Does the alt sound like it's working unusually hard? Like, with the car idling, you should be able to tell a difference in its whine, if you turn on the headlights, if everything else is off; does it do that? If so, then it's normal, and should all be good to go.

Re: Alternator Issue

Same voltage at battery as alt.
No noticeable sound difference between idle and revving or headlights on/off
There was a Tech. # on the paperwork so I called. Amazingly someone answered on second ring .
He asked alt. part # and asked what the issue was. I told him and he looked up the specs. and said the alt. is designed and manufactured for 14.7 volts.

Thanks for the help
