With the motor off, check (with a lamp or something) if you have battery voltage at the alternator post(s). If not then the wiring is broken somewhere.
It helps if you supply more details..

Check your fuses. I bet you the fan fuse is blown. If so, replace it. Your alternator should charge.

quick fix, take the red wire off the top (the three or two wire set up) and run it around to the red single wire on the back of your alt, this worked for me. Again check your fuse first make sure its not that if its not just go ahead and run the red to the red

its easy to test the fuse if your cooling fan doesnt come on then the fuse is out, if the your cooling fan (the big one up front) runs than i would just run red to red

What I'd do is jump it and start it. Check at the Alternator for voltage. If present at the alternator, check at the battery for voltage. Either your alternator isn't putting out 14v or you have a break in the wires going to your battery. Either way should be a simple fix.
But be 100% sure and see what your alternator is putting out.

Turns the car over??? When was that an issue?
Please describe your problems completely, chronologic, and in detail.
Otherwise the help you get will be relatively useless...

Just out of interest, why is the alternator linked in with the fan fuse? By being linked in with the fan fuse I take it that a problem with the fan circuit could in theory affect the alternator?

Yes Robert. For reasons beyond my comprehension, GM connected the one wire that induces the alternator to charge into the fan circuit. The fuse is labeled "FP Fan". I don't know what "FP" stands for either. So if this fuse is blown, the alternator will not charge.

Red to red will get the alternator to charge, if its not turning over, check to see if your battery is dead. If its not then you have a totally diffrent problem. And like the man said above list the whole problem.

Thanks for clearing that up Willie.

kjvail1204,

Do you mean connect the red wire from the 3 wire plug to the big red on the back of the alternator? I take it that the red on the 3 wire connector is the pickup for the voltage regulator?

Also, with the ignition ON but the engine OFF, should there be a high pitched whine from the alternator? I have such a noise but it goes away when I pull the fan fuse. Just want to confirm if I have a possible short somewhere.

Thanks for the help.

Yes run the three wire red to the single red, im not sure about the whine. See if that helps it if not then im not sure what the noise could be. Good luck, but i know for a fact that the red to red will fix your charging problem
