Headlights stuck up, is switch bad?

Headlights are stuck up, not stuck on anything, and the mechanism works. The interior dash lights also do not light up now, but the bulbs still work. Is my switch bad?

I do not have access to my manual right now to verify. I would first check to see if a fuse is blown for your dash lights as that maybe also tied in for the control circuit for the headlight up and down.

Do a search in the Electronics Tech Board for

FUSE for HEADLIGHTS!

It had the info for the fused & relays

Re: Headlights stuck up, is switch bad?

Here is your 1987 lighting wiring diagram. As you can see, the headlights themselves have no fuses or relays whatsoever, and are protected by "Fusible Link A", and the self resetting circuit breaker which is built into the headlight switch itself. The only fuse that could affect the lights ability to go down is the "Tail Fuse 20A" shown feeding power into the orange wire leading into the headlight switch. So the first question becomes, do your taillights and front running lights (called "Front park/turn lamp" in the diagram) work when you turn the headlight switch on? If not, it's possible the "Tail Fuse" is open (or perhaps the switch has malfunctioned). Are you handy with a voltmeter? If so, with the headlight switch in the off position there is supposed to be +12V on the white wire at the headlight module. You should check that, since having +12V on that white wire with the headlight switch in the off position is what triggers the module to close the headlight doors.

By the will of the classic car gods, the headlights work when they feel like it with the dash lights. I will be testing that with the wiring and I know how to use a voltmeter; however, I will also be tracing grounds and testing the switch. However the rear end decided it no longer wants to be working, so I gotta rebuild that first lol.

The wiring diagram looks to be 88+. Isn't 87 the last year of the "independent" headlight motor system ?? Meaning: wasn't 88 the first year that the Firebirds got the single "Headlight Module" (mounted to firewall near the wiper motor) to control BOTH headlight motors ?? IIRC there was an 82-84 set-up,.. then a 85-87 set-up and then 88-92. I thought 1987 was the last year before the "headlight module" set-up was introduced. ( my 88' has the firewall module. )
