Electronic Spark Control Module

Can anyone tell me exactly what this does? From the name I assume that it controls the timing of the sparks but I would like to know for sure and how it relates to the ignition control module.

it basically detects knock in the engine, or thats what i understand fromt he circuit description in the book.

As the Chilton manual states, "As the knock sensor detects engine knock, the voltage fromt he ESC module to the ECM is shut off and this signals the ECM to retard timing, if engine rpm is over about 900."

The ESC module basically acts as a go-between for the ECM, and the rest of the ignition.

Hope that helps,

Joker

Old cars used a vacuum advance distributor to advance and retard the timing of the car depending on the amount of vacuum being made. It allows the spark to fire later of sooner in the compression timing sequence. In modern computer controlled cars the ESC module performs this function after receiving a timing signal from the ECM. The ECM has taken in to consideration many other aspects (IAT, TPS, O2, Knock) to tell the ESC how much to advance or retard the timing from TDC. Hope this is what you needed.

thanks, that's pretty much what I wanted to know.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what application ESCM part # 16128261 was designed for? I'm wondering if anyone thinks it's a bad idea to put it in an '85 LG4 Camaro Sport Coupe.
