gauges
Yeah, the green lights are for my turn signals, the blue one is for my brights, and the red one is for my parking brake (otherwise I can't tell you how many times I'd drive off w/it on!)
I bought a wiring harness from Jegs made by Painless that I thought was *supposed* to hook right up to a GM harness, but of course it didn't
so I had to cut up the factory harness and wire it up to the connector that came w/the new harness. The only problem I have w/the gauges is that my oil gauge doesn't work, but I that's b/c I accidentally shorted out the sender and killed it.
Speaking of that, do any of you know where the factory sender is?

Speaking of that, do any of you know where the factory sender is? Holy cow.....I have the exact same gauges sitting on my workbench. I was going to put them into the car next week. I got the 5" tach and Speedo (same ones you have) and the other gauges, even the 2 gauge pod. EXACT SAME SETUP!
It is nice to see that it will all work out. I knew I could not fit three between the tach and speedo, and figured I would only be able to put 2 in....like yours.
My question.......what did you use for the mounting plate for the dash.......plastic, metal.....did you use the original as a template for the mounting screw holes? Did you have to cut out the white plastic portion that the original gauges were mounted to in order for clearance? Sorry so many questions, I'm just trying to figure out what I might run into next week (I took the whole week off and I'm hoping to get the new motor tranny and gauges in:lala: )
Give me any info you can.
The sender I believe mounts right above the oil pump.....back of the block behind the intake manifold, kinda of right underneath the distributor.......gonna be a PITA if you have to change it.

Hey iroczul8r how much did all that cost you? I have a serious problem with my electric speedo and I think I want to go with the gear driven. Just need a estimate on how much the whole set cost.
Like said above, I just bought these also. AutoMeter Pro Comp UltraLites
ATM 4495 5" Mechanical Speedo 160 MPH in dash $113
ATM 4498 5" Electronic Tach 10K in dash $129
ATM 4314 2 1/16" Fuel gauge $36
ATM 4337 2 1/16" Water temp $38
ATM 4327 2 1/16" Oil pressure $52
ATM 4391 2 1/16" Voltmeter $36
The gauges come with the necessary senders. The above part numbers are summits.

I think the gauges ended up costing me about $500 out of Jegs, and then I had to get some special speedo cable for another $40 at the local speed shop b/c none of the auto parts stores had one, and the factory one has a different connector than the AutoMeter.

I used a peice of plexiglass to mount the new gauges. I had to draw out my own template after tracing around the old cover. And yeah, I did use the old one to mark the mounting screws on too, but they were just a little bit off, so I used the washers. I meant to paint those, but I needed the car, so I didn't get to that in time. I tried to fit all 4 of the small gauges in on the dash, but after I had cut and painted the plexiglass, I found out that they won't fit right! So I had to make a whole new one for that. I'd post a pic of the old one to let you know what I'm talking about, but I'm at school right now.
As for that white thing that held the old gauges, there are 2 nuts back in where the idiot lights are that hold it on. I took those off and pulled the whole thing out so I'd have space to put the new ones, otherwise the bolts on the back are too long. Even after taking that out, there still wasn't quite enough room, and I guess I could cut those things down, but it's not enough for me to worry about right now.
I'll write more later if you need, but I've gotta get to class right now.

Ok, here's the panel I made that didn't fit. The big 5" gauges were just a little too high, and the small ones on the bottom were just too low, and I couldn't move them any closer together.
One thing I forgot to note, if you remove that white plastic thing (anyone got a name for it?) you'll lose the 2 mounting screws that are near the steering column, but I think the other 6 make up for this pretty well.

Hey I got mine in. I painted the plexiglass with RustOleum's "Hammer Finish" paint. It goes on rough and blends in well with the original plastic. I tried taking some pistures tonight but the flash jacked things up. I will try again tomorrow when the suns up. Thanks for the advice!
