406 shortblock

considering selling the 406 I have .480/.480 cam flat tappet 10.14 comp. 5.565 rods stock 400 crank all machining done and motor together but not started. maching was $1300 minus about $60 for drilling steam holes in the heads. and I paid $500 for the donor block. looking for $1000 negot. this is with no heads or intake. it is an 817 casting stronger than the 4 bolt main blocks. it is a 2 bolt but it would be good to between 500 to 600 hp. the 2 bolt is stronger than the 4 bolt factory anyway.

Hehe, they paid you $60 to drill steam holes? What brand/type of pistons? Hypers/forged? What about the rod and main bolts (ARP??)? What else do you know about the cam? What kind of timing chain? I thought the 509 casting was supposed to be the best, and not sure between the 511 (4-bolt) and 817.

Why are you selling it? I am looking for a new shortblock assembly to put in my camaro and was pushing the idea of a 383 or 406 and I am really interested. I live in Elyria, Ohio so pick up could be arranged. Who put the shortblock together? You or a machine shop? Any other info about the pistons, cam brand, etc. would be helpful. Let me know..

Riverside engines did all the machine work. Speed Pro hyper pistons stock rods lunati bracket master 2 cam and lifter set .480/.480 stock crank also. block align bored block .030 because of slight out of round on 2 cylinders decked minimally to assure trued head surface arp throughout. it has a cloyes timing gear set on it could be swapped out though. bearings are all fresh. this motor has never been started I have it all the way together and changed my mind on it. decided I wanted to do a 358 instead. I still have the maching receipt somewhere for $1300 for work done and bearings. new freeze plugs and hot tank also. also the 817 is a two bolt just as strong as 509 everyone hypes up the 509 because supposedly they are high nickel . well some are and some aren't like the 010 350 block. I work making cranks for cummings and Cat and met reports differ greatly from day to day as with anything else in the auto industry. anyway let me know if any interest. Thanks

I am interested, i was looking for a 383 but a 400 would do... Did you get everything balenced or was it not neccassary because it is all stock, do you have the reciepts? Are you willing to ship? Does this have an oil pan? I have the intake and carb so all it would need it heads, ignition, acc's and start? Do you have any pics?

also, would do you have heads to sell with it?

What is the deck height now (how far down are the pistons in the hole)? How much dish or valve clearance in the pistons?

Does it come with anything other than the block/rotating stuff/cam? How about timing cover, oil pan, oil pump, balancer, flexplate?

How much would you want for it without the cam/timing gears.

Would you charge extra to strap it to a pallet and get it to a shipping dock (looks like you work at a place that could accomodate something like that)?

it didn't need balanced as it was mostly stock other than pistons. I still have the receipt around here somewhere. I would be willing to let the heads go also for another $500. they are bowtie 034 heads with tit valves steam holes are there. deck height is stock they trued surface with minimal cleanup so there is hardly a change. timing cover (billet aluminum) is there also a milodon stock style pan. I will have to check on the ch for sure but the pistons are 21 cc dish. I would do $900 with out cam or timing gears. I would be willing to ship but will charge $35 for the pallet and shipping will be your choice but would be pickup from the shop I have the car stored at. it is commercial anyway so probably no difference in price. no tow motor though so would need liftgate. It would be about a 2.5 hour drive to a drop off I think the closest is Columbus. So pickup is definitely preffered but I will do what I can.

I am def interested in all of it, basically with the heads included it would just need and intake and a carb and ingnition? For $1500 i would be interested in that but i am not sure how much it would be to ship to 11795, I will look into it and let you know, if it is under a few hundred i would be very interested...
