Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
Okay, in about 2-3 months I'm gonna finish my motor swap, and then I'm gonna have my still running L03 just sitting around here taking up space. I'm yanking the whole motor, the only things I'm keeping are accessories and ignition. The motor leaks oil at the pan, it's a slight bit dented around the drain plug, but it still comes off easily. It was rebuilt at 100K and has 55K on it now. It still runs pretty strong, just don't have a need for it and well if one of you guys on here do I'd rather GIVE it to you then sell it to someone off the forum. Like I said, still runs, can drop it right in and drive. Computer and harness included. The reason I'm posting now is so we can set it up so that when it's out of the car, someone can just up and grab it. I don't want it sitting in my out door shed.

Seriously I know it's not a TPI or anything, but the operative word here is free lol.

Sounds like a pretty generous offer to me. Just a quick minute of searching leads me to think shipping would be around $250 to Ga. You're cool with crating it up and all? I'm interested.

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
I'd crate it, but I've never crated a motor for shipping before, is the materials extremely expensive? If it is extremely expensive for the crating process then I'd need for you to foot the bill on that too. I used to work at a home depot so I get palletes for free. Other than that I wouldn't even know where to begin. So if you could guide me, and if I have some other questions, answer them, it's all yours.

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
I've never crated one either. A little searching on google hasn't answered much for me either. About all I found were tips on using a pallet, but nothing on how to secure it or anything...
I have no problem footing the bill for any materials you will need for the job, as well as a little more if there turns out to be some work involved.
No need to rush and worry about it though, you said about 3 months right?
I'll make a post on here and ask if anyone has shipped one, and could help us out with the specifics, and any tips.
Sound good to you?

Sounds great man, keep me posted. Oh and just so you know the TBI has all the "free" mods done to it by myself, with silicone seals put in instead of rubber. Everything else in and on the motor is stock.

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
I just called this company
and they quoted me $394.11 from door to door at 500 lbs. That would be someone at your place with a lift to get it, and then bringing it to me, and delivering it with a lift. That takes out the part of either of us having to find somewhere with a loading dock. I'm not sure what it even weighs, but 500 was just a guess while I had someone on the phone. It may be a little more or less...
The guy on the phone said all an engine would need is to be strapped down to a palet. Sounds simple enough. I had mentioned to him that I was trying to find out how we should crate it up, and he said crating wasn't necessary, just securely strapped to a palet.
Did you do the rebuild yourself, or have a shop do it? I assume that means all the bearings, rings, and seals. Anything else new in there?

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
if you work at somewhere with a shipping dock commercial shipping is usually alot cheaper. put it on the pallet and buy a cheap set of ratchet straps and it is good enough to ship. also most engine hoist (cherry pickers) go up high enough to get it off the truck. A friend of mine has a car shop here in town and that is how we always did it and it was usually $200 or less from Alabama GA to NW ohio. hope this might help you guys out.

My dad did the rebuild, and yeah all new seals, gaskets, and bearings. Like I said, only leak is around the oil pan, and it's only a really slow drip. Drain plug comes out as easy as if it weren't dented too.

Less all accessories, need them for my motor swap. As for the shipping deal, he understands it's going to be a while before this happens (approx. 3 mos.) and if he decides not to do it you'll first to know.

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
Haha yeah I still have the motor, it hasn't been pulled yet. It'll be about 3 months till it is, and then on top of that, there's aguy who will pay shipping who's first in line, then the guy above you, then yourself. Third isn't a bad place to be though, so I'll keep you informed. As for where I live, about 30 min. from NYC.

I have a complete LO3 form a 91 bird that I am also looking to get rid of, but I don't want to ship it. For you guys in the NYC area, it is a long haul, but doable...you could make a weekend of it and sightsee at niagara falls, etc. Engine comes with fuel injection, ignition, ecm, no front acc. no exhaust manifolds, but otherwise complete. I still have to pull the motor but if someone wanted it, I can do it no problem.
I would want $50 for it.--and yes it runs.

I guess this just became the free (or almost free) give your L03 away thread lol.
----------
Haha don't worry man you were first on my list, you'll be first to know when it's out of the car.
----------
Oh and I don't mind you jacking my thread, but you should probably give info on the motor, or it'll just sit in your yard as a plant and rust collector.

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
If the extra $10 or so isnt a concern the EASIEST way to secure an engine is go to walmart and get the cheap ~1.5" wide tie down straps from the automotice dept, they usually come 2-3 in a pack and are used ot secure loads to a bed, also commonly used to secure a boat to a trailer as extra insurance so you know what kind are being looked at. Then take a 2x3 board, cut it into segments tall as the engine, screw it to the corners, then take a sheet of plywood and cut it into panels large enough to cover the sides and top which you screw onto the 4 posts you made from the 2x3..... easiest, relatively cheap way to make a durable crate for the engine.
Technically you can go as little as just strapping it onto the pallet, but then a guy on a warehouse detail or whatever might snag a carb or distributor or something off it...
Also, if you want it not to move/be more stable, throw a junk unmounted tire onto the pallet before lowering the engine on, drop the oil pan into the hole in the center and it helps keep the engine steady in place.....

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
Definitely some good tips, thank you! I think the tire idea is a real good one. I already have an oil pan to replace the one on there with, but I still think it would help. Thanks again!
Edit: I forgot about this...
Me and a buddy were talking about it last night, and had the idea if it would be cheaper and safer to rent a truck and drive up there. I'll check into what the rental/gas would cost, and see if it would be worth it. I've never been that far up north, and would kinda like to see it anyway...

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
When I was in Tx. in the Army I drove home and went from Tx. through La. to AL. and up through Ga. It was an awesome ride. As for seeing the sights, I'm only about 30 min. from NYC so that could turn out to be a cool day trip. And the ride up 95 is pretty much painless except around Baltimore, because well, the roads around that city are kinda crazy.
Edit: Depending on the size of the truck rental, you'd probably spend about 250 in gas all around. If it was an S-10 rental or something to that degree.

I've made a few round trips from new england down to louisiana and back.... getting ready to shoot back up again in the bird soon actually. When I go, and it depends what part of GA you're in if it makes sense, I actually took some other roads - I cut fom I-59 to I75 to I-81, eventually onto I-84 .... avoids the busy parts of the highways including baltimore, dc, and most importantly NYC..... makes for a real easy drive and its through some really nice country too... easy on/off for the fuel and what not. Depends on what part of GA you were in. Oh yea, I dont recall ever any tolls on roads or bridges either....
If you have AAA they print out bound books for you free of charge, outlines food, fuel, hotels, and best of all, marks areas with construction. Think its called a trip tik or something like that.

Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
Hey guys. One of the best ways to crate an engine is to simply bolt it directly to a sturdy pallet at the bellhousing flange. Be sure to drain all the fluids completely and make a recess for the crank first of course. Jasper, Marshall, and Four Star all ship their remans this way. It would be cheaper and much sturdier than using cheap ratchet straps.
Re: Free L03 (You pay shipping or pick up)
When I bought a rebuilt motor from a speed shop in TX years ago, they took some 1 inch, sqaure, steel tubing, and welded it together into a stand with 4 legs. The front legs bolted into the front of the block on either side of the timing cover, and the rear legs bolted into a couple of the bellhousing holes. Then they bolted the stand to a sturdy wood pallet, and shrink wrapped the hell out of the motor. I picked it up at the local Yellow Freight terminal, and it only ran about $200-$250 IIRC. Just figured I'd throw another suggestion on here for how to go about shipping it safely and affordably. Btw, I also agree on the tire idea. A big old truck tire is a great cushion to set a motor on! Done that many times in the garage. For shipping, the metal stand on a pallet is probably better though. When one is sat on a tire, it's not as sturdy and prone to shifting or rolling to one side or the other.

Hey Titan, don't think I forgot about this thread lol. It's still in play, just like I said it'll be a little bit before the motor is pulled. Just wanted to give you the update, and that we're waiting on my block to come back from the machine shop. Soon as the motor is together, we'll pull the 305 and you'll be the first to know.
Oh yeah, and thank you to everyone who has posted here about crating a motor. Gave me some really good ideas, and cheap too....... Titan I'm sure you're happy about that. Still thinking of renting a small truck?

Thanks for the update man.
Yea, we're still kicking around the idea, since the cost would be about the same, but we'd get a chance to go farther north than either of us have been before. (a little vacation for us financially challenged people). I'm subscribed to this thread, so anytime you need to get hold of me, you can post here or PM me. I usually log on daily. And get emails on my phone every time someone does either one. I'm watching closely! Once again, thanks man!
