Borg Warner 9-bolt, 3.27 posi w/ disc brakes
Hey all,
I've finally got the rear end pulled and ready to go out of my Firebird. Here's the specs:
-3.27:1 Positraction
-pre-'89 Disc Brakes (w/ almost new pads)
-Royal Purple 75W-90 Fluid
-ARP 2.5" Extended Wheel Studs
Originally came out of an '85 Trans Am, had ~60,000 miles on it when pulled. I put it in my '87 Formula (originally a drum brake 10-bolt car). When I installed it in the Formula, I filled it up with Valvoline 80W-90 DuraBlend Gear Oil, and a new seal. At this time, it had the earlier, iron caliper rear disc brakes.
About 5k miles later, I decided to do the PBR brake conversion, along with a T/A Performance Diff Girdle. When I did the conversion, I put in the ARP Wheel Studs and changed the diff fluid to Royal Purple 75W-90 full synthetic. After this, I put another 21k miles on the rear end before the vehicle was totaled this summer.
After I got my GTA, I pulled the PBR disc brakes and T/A Performance girdle off of this rear end and swapped them over. I put the Delco Moraine calipers back on this rear, along with the original stamped steel cover and non-ground bearing caps. The original caps were torqued back to the factory specified 40 ft-lbs after installation. I didn't have a gasket for a 9-bolt, so I made an RTV seal. The gasket surface is perfectly clean, so all you would have to do is scrape off the RTV if you wanted to run a regular paper gasket. I've always had good luck with just the RTV. It still has the Royal Purple Fluid in it. The photo below is a shot with the cover off that I took last week. Notice how clean it is inside.

There are no leaks, either from the axle tubes, the bearings, or the brakes. I never heard any gear noise from it either. The posi-traction works, and will leave two black marks. To my knowledge (based on the condition of the T/A this came out of, as well as all of my ownership) this rear-end has never been raced. I set it up for autocross, and then never made it back to the track after I installed this rear.
I'm asking $225 for it. I do not want to ship. I make regular trips through Austin, so that would be a free of charge delivery. I also periodically go to Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and West Texas. I can meet someone within a reasonable distance for the price of gas. I'm also making a trip to Colorado at the end of the summer, I can deliver along the way if it doesn't sell by then.
I'll post when it sells. Can send more pictures upon request.
