91 GTA 10 bolt rearend

I have nowhere to put it, so it needs to go. It is 3.23 posi with drum brakes. It makes a whirring when driving, sounds like a bearing, but it works perfectly at the moment. E brake cables and brakes included.

$150 picked up OBO.

Re: 91 GTA 10 bolt rearend

It was getting fairly loud when I finally swapped it. Not sure what is causing it, but I did recently change the fluid due to the noise and everything looked fine with the gears.

Sounds like your pinion is ready to go.

You mean the pinion bearing? The gears looked perfectly fine, and it really does sound like a bearing to me. I could be wrong, but that's what I think it is.

Re: 91 GTA 10 bolt rearend

Nope, the pinion. If what you mean by whining is that it sounds like you're passing by a tractor trailer while riding over a bridge or listening to a jet land then it's your pinion. Had the same thing happen to me, I thought it was my trans when I first heard the noise but after a week, my rearend went. The pinion shattered and ate up my gear.

Re: 91 GTA 10 bolt rearend

Whirring, not whining. Sounds just like a bad wheel bearing basically, to me at least.

Re: 91 GTA 10 bolt rearend

I heard the same whinning sound in my rear end and a spring came out of the Auburn carrier and the pinion broke, the sound became louder and louder after short period of time and then, it broke!!! I wouldn't bolt it without investigating further for this mysterious sound!!! Good luck

This has taken 1.5 years to get loud enough for me to change it. We checked everything in the center when we changed the fluid , all looked good.
