Re: Jeep cherokee and Astro van steering shafts
Finally had a chance to install this mod today (shaft and bearing). Everyone makes it look easy in the videos, and yes, in theory, it should be easy, but MAN, what a PAIN THE THE ****!!
Unbolting near the power steering pump was easy, as was near the firewall. Sliding off near the PS pump, relatively easy. Sliding it off at the other end, ARGH!!! took me maybe an hour to wiggle it off, beat it with a hammer at weird angles etc. Finally got the idea to turn the wheel a half turn to expose the thru-bolt hole and use a screwdriver as leverage. Voila!
Then the dreaded bearing. The old bushing is rubber, so it doesnt just slide off. Again, more wiggling and turning to get it off.
Finally got that off, and low and behold, my Astro bearing does NOT fit at all. It does not fit on my steering column. I cant even get it started. Seems like the bearing is too small, although it looks the same size as my old bushing. Very weird. If anything, it would have to be pressed on, but at this funny angle and clearance, good luck with that.
Trying now to wrestle the old bushing back into place....ugh. Hopefully the steering shaft itself will be easy to install.

Did you try greasing up the column beforehand? Had to do it when I first started using them then tapping it up with a hammer

Re: Jeep cherokee and Astro van steering shafts
Nope, bought one from the seller here, the OP of this thread. Looks like a used astro bearing to me.
Just cleaned up the shaft, lubed it, but I cannot even get the bearing on at all, not even straight enough to hammer it on. Oh well

Have you seen this vid on you tube? It was quite helpful when I was installing mine which I got from the wrecking yard. Where in L.A. are you?
