Re: 2.8 rebuild kit

just went through the same exact thing this winter lol. my 85 berlinetta with a 2.8 was knocking too. so i pulled it and rebuilt it. but if you need prices and such, i have about $400 total when its all said and done,,,IF you do your own work....

i got my "crank kit" which includes reground crank shaft, clevite rod, and main bearings matched to crank for $150. and your crank is required as a core. one of my machine shops got it for me for that price. mattingly automotive. then the complete gasket kit was also $150 (rip off), but i coulda got it cheaper using my shop's account (but in a rush). then some money on engine paint, right stuff gasket sealer, 3m gasket glue, ect, ect, ect.

oh and i had to pay like $5 to get another main cap from a junkyard 2.8 laying in an engine scrap pile before scrapping began (PURE LUCK). and the machine shop charged me $15 for a reconditioned rod.

so obviously i had a rod knocking and a main thumping. i was recomended to get the block line honed (another $250) but i refused because he said it was just a security thing, and he got my main cap sanded down so it was within .001" than the rest. so i risked it, and so far so good

Re: 2.8 rebuild kit

i can get another 3.4 for about that price that comes with the tranny and everything. im debating on this because idk much about rebuilding. couldnt i just go through and replace the bearings that are bad? iv only done 1 teardown and rebuild and that was on a 350 lt1 with my buddy so this is my first time im alone so i need alittle help on what to do. i wouldnt mind the 3.4 because its newer, faster. but the 2.8 is strong aswell. idk about speed since iv never stomped it completely

Re: 2.8 rebuild kit

as far as just putting new bearings with the same crank and hurt rod, is a no no. they must be re cut and have oversized bearings installed. i would replace the rod no matter what so you dont have to oversize the other 5 rods. but when you spin a bearing, it eats up the journals most instantly. i also dont know how long you drove it with it knocking. you could have gotten away with replacing the bearings when you were reading low oil pressure BUT not knocking yet. every "knock" is some metal shaved away.

and a 3.4 swap sounds like a good idea.
