To anyone with a 400...
Where'd you get the engine? I've been thinking about putting one in my Z, but I'm undecided as to how to go about it. I imagine the best way to go is to buy a Dart block and build it from the ground up, but I'd like to hear other people's opinions and how you came by your 400.

Heh, one was given to me by a friend who had it in his '69 Nova that had caught fire from the firewall back. The other block I have, I bought it off eBay at a decent deal, shipping killed me though. Everytime I come across one I plan to buy it. Dart blocks are nice if you have the cash.

Car: Camaro
Engine: 305-150/254 combo
Transmission: TH350 or T200
Axle/Gears: Srange 12 bolt; 5.14 or 5.38
The block and crank I am using now was received by accident. Guy I got it from thought it was a 350 motor. Being that trans and all accesories were still on it when I got, it wasn't until I was stripping it down that it was discovered to be a 400. The spare 4-bolt block I have was given to me by my motor guy.
The new Motown block is very nice but WAY heavy compared to the original stock blocks.

MY MOTOR IS A ONE OWNER (ME). I ORDERED A 400 IN MY 1974 MONTE CARLO. DROVE IT TILL 2001, THEN REBUILT IT AND PUT IT INTO MY 86 TRANS AM. THE MACHINE SHOP WHO DID MY WORK HAD A COUPLE OF 400'S ON HAND. BE SURE TO CHECK THE JUNK YARDS BACK WHERE THE OLD CARS SIT. YOU MIGHT RUN ACROSS ONE. I SEE ONE MORE SOURCE NO ONE HAS MENTIONED. STOCK CAR CLAIMERS. YOU MIGHT HEAR OF A 400, AND WORK OUT A DEAL TO HAVE SOMEONE CLAIM IT. THEN BUY IT FROM THEM.

MY CAPS KEY IS TURNED ON, LIKE I ALWAYS HAVE IT. I KNOW MOST EVERYONE USES SMALL LETTERS, IT IS JUST MY CHOICE TO USE CAPITALS. I HAVE ALWAYS PRINTED ALL MY NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE IN CAPITAL LETTERS. AFTER YEARS AND YEARS, IT IS JUST EASIER TO READ (FOR ME). THE ONLY THING I EVER WRITE IS MY NAME. IS THERE A PARTICULAR REASON YOU WOULD LIKE IT OFF ?? (OF COURSE, I DON'T USE THE SHIFT KEY, SO EVERYTHING WILL BE IN SMALL LETTERS).
