What's a good set of tools to have to swap engines?

My friend said he would help me pull my old engine, and drop in a new one if i bought all of the tools.

I was thinking about picking up some power tools too, what would be really helpful for engine removal?

Just wondering if I could get some input, im sick of constantly having to make 20 trips to the parts store to get tools as i need them. (With a list, i could cut that down to 10 trips! : ))

Thanks for any input!

You'll need 1/4" drive, 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive ratchets and socket sets. You'll also need wrenches. Since our cars use metric and English fasteners, you'll need both types of wrenches and sockets. You'll want doubles of certain sizes like 9/16, 5/8, 1/2, 10 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm. You'll also need 3", 6" and 12" extensions. You probably only need a 3" extension for the 1/4" and 1/2" drive ratchets, but I suggest all three for the 3/8" drive. If you have TPI, you'll have to get a set of Torx sockets. A variety of screwdrivers, pliers, and a hammer are also nice. You need an engine hoist, and a stand to set the old engine on. If you don't plan on working on the old engine, an old tire works just fine. With those, you should have every tool you need to pull an engine. You might not have exactly the right thing, but you should be able to adapt what you have to work with not much more effort. Sometimes you just have to be creative.
Don't forget a good floor jack and jackstands to raise the car up. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't work under a car supported only by a jack. There's not a worse feelign than seeing the car wobble and then watching it rush down toward your face. Fortunately when I happend to me I was very close to the front of the car and was able to get out from under just in time to avoid being smushed. Scared the crap outta me.

All that being said, me and my dad did our first engine swap with an incomplete set of wrenches and sockets and managed to get it done, but it was not fun at all and took a lot of creativeity.

Wow! Good stuff. Thank you.

Yeah, I have jackstands. I used to just use a lift, but once when i was parked on a lawn, my friend and i were changing the oil, and i noticed the jack was sinking into the ground a bit, so i had to pull him out real quick before my car fell off of it.

Stupid stupid stupid, but we learned from our mistake.

I still like to point out that my car was trying to kill him, he had just called her, "Fat a§§" right before this happened.
