need advice on heads and cam

i have an LG4 motor 86 305, with the mods listed on my signature:

600cfm Holley, Edelbrock Performer intake, 180* stat, Dual Spal fans, Dynomax cat back, high flow cat.

i bought the car from a family who's father owned the car. I have no idea about what cam it has now.. but the car is a 5 speed, and launches like a bat out of hell... has a low rumble to the idle too.

anyways.. of course i want more power from my car. Heads i know, are a necessity for 305's as well as a new beefier cam.

what combinations can/should i use? im not rich.. so im not going to buy 1000$ heads.. i want something better than what i have now, and a better cam.

any idea's?

PS this car will NOT be raced.. it will be my weekend warrior car.

The best set of heads for power, would be Vortec castings. However, they will require a specific intake because of their simple intake bolt pattern.

If you can't get a new intake, then I would recommend World Products 305 Torquer heads, with your own port and polish job.

Some people might recommend L98 aluminum Vette heads, but they are way overpriced for what you get and you'll have to mill them (though you will have to mill the Vortecs also).

As for the cam, something in the range of 210-230* and .440-.480 lift will work well for your application. Of course the more duration you get on the cam, the less bottom end power you will have, but you'll gain top end charge.

Something to think about anyway.

iroc22 has been a vocal advocate of Vortecs, while I've been a vocal critic of them and equally vocal advocate of World heads. Funny, since we both have World heads...

Along with the special intake manifold, you have to use self-aligning rockers with Vortecs. Before you go invest in a set of those heads, get a copy of the August '02 Chevy High Performance magaizine. It has an article that describes their limititations, and what modifications you need to make them work. One of those limitations as-built is valve lift no greater than .420".

The article doesn't mention, however, the milling (which iroc22 did), to get the chambers down to 58cc for use on a 305. Since you have to take off about .04" to do that, you should also have that special Vortec intake manifold milled, too.

For all that, you could go ahead and get the World heads. They should at least be pocket ported (also called bowl blending), but other than that they're ready to go.

A lower cost alternative would be to port your current heads. But, they really should have 1.94" intake valves and screw-in studs, and need new springs for a cam upgrade; so, the total cost can approach the cost of the Worlds, especially if they need guides, too.

Your exhaust manifolds and y-pipe are probably limiting you as much or more than the heads are right now. Have you considered headers?

Just curious, how you going to pass smog with a Holley on it?

I'm standing behind five7kid on this one. Most people don't realize the power increases that can be had with a simple change of exhaust components.....

weekend warrior= something i drive on the weekend that i DO NOT take to the track... theres alot of windy roads and hills close to where i live so i'd just basically drive those and make a Rustang GT look stupid in the process

sounds like alot of money in these heads.. should i keep the heads i have now and change the springs, rockers, ect... or buy new ones? i really dont want the hassel of having to take them get them milled..

as for the headers... i was waiting too see what heads i should use 1st.. then i would do the headers..
