305 to 350 swap how much $$$$?????
305 to 350 swap how much $$$$?????
ok if you don't know my story here is the short version.
if got a 88 IROC with a 305 TPI with 33,000 original miles well the local lube guys messed up an oil change and caused the engine to blow up.and now it is shot. they have agreed to pay to put in a rebuilt (GM) for $3,000 (dealer quote) (12 month/12,000 mile Warranty) now i am going to put up another $400 and get a new engine (jasper) with a 3 yr/50,000 mile warranty.
my question is on your opinion what do you guys think the cost would be to put a 350 in there?
quick and clean what needs to be changed so the car can acccept a 350?
I have no clue on what is needed. I don't plan on doing this myself, but what i am looking at right now is a 305 IROC with no engine but with a $3,000 check in my pocket from a insurance company to play with. what do you guys think the guesstimation on how much i am going to need to pay above that for a engine and a swap?
what would you guys do if you were in my shoes?
first off i don't want to go crazy and second the car is stock so i have no aftermarket parts to swap to the 350. i was planning on starting to mod it this summer when this happened.
ideas?
comments?
thanks.....

Knock sensor and prom need to be changed, I would also change the injectors to 22-24 lb (not REQUIRED, you can use the 19 lbs from the 305 but get them cleaned and flowed). Other than that...nada.
You can get a GM crate engine cheaper than a Jasper and the warranty on the GM will be the same. Also the GM warranty will be easier to "collect" on and with a whole lot less hassles.

oh man, i feel really sorry for you...........................
if your not doing the swap yourself, i think its going to be more than $3000.......................................
i think you should have gotten an estimate before you let those lube-idiots just give you a set amount
some kid in mechanic school paid $6000 to have a pro swap a 350 into his 305 monte carlo.................thats was parts and labor
i felt bad for him, because he could have probably asked a group of us and we would have helped
anyways
your going to need an engine
and everything else stated above
figure a GM replacement engine 350 about $1500
everything else: $300
thats cutting it close
hope i didnt ruin your day dude
good luck

the $3,000 is what the chevy dealer said would cost to put in a rebuilt GM. $3,400 for a new one.
the insurance is paying the estimite that the dealer said. $3,000.
so i get a rebuit for free
$400 for a new one. (305)
and i don't know yet for a 350.

To be basic with this answer. As long as it is a one piece rear main seal engine you could exchange the 305 with a 350 without changing anything and it would work and run stronger. Nothing replaces cubic inches. Prom's, Knock Sensors or anything else would and could improve performance but over all it would work...
I have been looking into doing the 305 to 350 swap & I'm no expert, but looking thru the boards here, I have come across the following. (Please correct me if im wrong on anything guys)
the knock sensor should be replaced & it costs $36 locally, the injectors don't have to be replaced, but you get better performance (can be done later). The tranny is the same, as is the flywheel I believe. The Eprom will work from the 305, but once again better performace & a custom chip costs $350, the thing I'm still looking into is the exhaust, not sure if the stock exhaust will work or not, ive heard conflicting reports back & forth on it. youd be better off spending maybe $1500 on a rebuilt good 350 motor, I paid about $1200 for my 350 4 bolt main with flat top pistons & an ISKY cam & 194 heads.
I called around & 1 shop wanted about $1000 to swap the motor for me. so I think you could get a rebuilt 350 installed for your $3000, granted it wont have all the high performace mods we all want, but its a good starting motor to work on, the mods can go in pretty easy for the most part, you want the motor itself the best you can do & build up from there.
hope this helps

THE price is........
I have been doing the 305 -> 350 swap in my 92. Its all TBI, but TPI only changes a few things.
If you wanna do it right this is what your looking at.
Knock Sensor -> you need a 350 one (It is different) $35
22lb injectors -> The 19lb will lean out at high RPM's $200ish
(Prom Chip) -> Just gotta do it. $???
ESC Module -> (Electronic Spark Control) Its different on 350 $50
Computer Chip -> You need to tell the ECM that you putting more fuel into a larger motor $350(FastChip.com see Ed Wright)
And all new sensors for everything (Well you don't have to, but it is recommended to change them. Less things that could be messing you up if there is any problem when you get it hooked up.
There you have it. I payed $500 for my motor(used) and am at $1500 and everything is done.
I'ld say $1000 more than the price of the motor is all you should have to pay for everything.
* the prom chip -> I'ld go to the local salvage yard and pull one off of a 90-92 Z28 They were all 350TPI's Lets say $15
 Good Luck and Happy swapping

have decided to go with the new 305.
i just don't have the extra money to go the 350 route.
i think i am going to regret it later though.
damm if it costs that much....$1000 in parts above the cost of the engine then damm, i guess $4200 for a complete swap is not bad.
for me the price would have been $1200

thanks for the advice

Well, if that's what you wanna do....
Before you decide to up and go with a 305..........
How much were they charging you to do the swap.
And how much was the motor.
I think that I can find a way to get you hooked up....

Personally, I think that you probably will end up wishing you would have done the 350. I still wish that I would have spent more money and got a hotter cam & head package. Good luck with that 305!!
i dunno, if your not going to take the car to the drags every week why spend the extra cash on a 350. I do have a place in my heart for the 305
it's a good motor (if the lube techs put oil in it) and TPI 305's are sweet (i have one). So, over all, i'd say you won't regret it, the 350 swap would be a real pain in the *** to have to pay for, BUT, i would have made a case that, a thirdgen has a future possibility of being a collectable car, and now you won't have a Numbers Matching car. even though no one really cares, you may have gotten extra cash out of them for it. Then again, they'd be suing me cause i woulda went back to that garage and BEAT THE LUBE TECHS ***! but i don't think you'll regeret the 305. Have fun man.

Just so you know....
I was a strong supporter of the 305 for years that's what I had in my '92(stock). After I had 3 friends all blow thier 305 motors under 120,000mi and mine went at 127,625mi. This made me realize that 305's aren't near the motor that 350's are. I have since swapped out the 305(shattered piston, bent connecting rod, cracked head by the water jacket), and put in a used 350(out of a truck with 88,000mi) that I rebuilt. I used to love my 305, but after having that extra 50+ horses that I have now(at the rear tires) I wouldn't go back noway!
And just for the record, a 350 is usually CHEAPER to purchase than a 305 due to the larger market for the 350. However used 305's can be purchased for almost nothing from people who just want to get rid of them(because they went 350
Also now with the 350, the only way a mustang can keep up is if I'm hauling it in a trailor. WWIIILLLBURRR!!!

OH, I forgot to mention. DUDE PLEASE FOR A FELLOW F-BODY MAN, DO YOUR OWN OIL CHANGES. I used to work for PEP-BOYS on the parts side. I saw tons of SH*T that these so called "mechanics" do. I wouldn't trust most of them to put a wheel on my wagon, let alone touch my pride-n-joy. Most of the time the guy that ends up doing the oil changes, is the guy that just got hired and doesn't know jack **** about cars. Its your call about whatever you do.
Just something to think about.

RS good call on the pep boys thing. it took them 3 hours to mount 4 tires and install wiper blades on my cousins truck, and they had like 3 guys workin for each car. must be nice to slack off all freakin day and get paid
