should be a pretty easy swap, i'd get rid of the ecm controls unless you have e chack and have to have them.

The carb will need new hangers to fatten it up. You can reuse the stock manifolds and exhaust if you want to. The Ho manifolds were bigger than normal. Everything is the same externally on SBCs. It's only 6 bolts, two trans lines, and some hoses to get the engine and tranny out as one unit, just watch the wires and make sure you have lots of lifting room.

exhaust and carbs

i just did a 350 swap in a 86 for a friend but as far as exhaust goes i figured i would fabracate a system with a 3 in. cat back and mandrel a 2.5 in. into a dual inlet single out cat with cut outs at the first bends in the system as for carbs i though i would have to use it with comp control to pass emisions along with a edlebrock performer egr manifold to stay legal as far as bolt up i'm more than sure it will slide right in

what i need to know more than anything is what is the best husrt shifter to use in the 3rd gen autos and emisions issues

There are two articles on this board by Steve Green with "Stroke in the Desert", or something like that, in the titles. He did an emissions-legal '83 'Bird 383 swap, with basically all the things you discuss.

I'd go with SLP 1-3/4" primary headers rather than the TES he used. For the rest of the system, ready-to-bolt-on parts for dual-cat are available off-the-shelf - why bother fabricating? Also, consider a GM Performance Parts intake (like the ZZ4 take-off I'm using) - it's a better part than the Performer. A Weiand EGR Action+ would be better than the Edelbrock as well, and would cost less than a new GMPP manifold.

He had Jet work over his CC q-jet, and provide a new chip for the ECM. Passed emissions with flying colors, you should, too.

Hurst used to make a console Quarter Stick, not sure they still do. The more common are B&M MegaShifter or Hammer for 3rd gen console.

For tranny, I'd suggest you get with Dana at ProBuilt (he frequents the Transmission & Drivetrain forum 1-800-776-3288). He'll custom build a performance transmission for you, made to last. Will also work with you on the converter choice.
