Can you swap?????????
Can you swap?????????
Can you swap a V6 motor to a V8 WITHOUT getting a new trans?
Or do I have to get one to fit? I want to keep it computer
controlled, TPI, with overdrive ( 700R4). It's for my 91 RS.

Damn! So I guess I'll have to buy a new crate motor and trans.
Together. Screw it for now, that's like up to $10,000 for what I want including, radiator, mounts, A/C,P/S,Water pump, brackets,TPI w/harness and ECM,etc.
Oh well, I'm better off upgrading my V6 the way it is, like maybe a cam w/lifters,1.6 roller rockers, port/polished intakes, etc.
Thanks.

Don't waste your money with the v6 unless you have a lot of it, which it sounds like you do not! I did the same thing with my 305 and then i went and bought a crate motor. If a v8 is what you want, then save your money and it will come sooner than you think b/c you will get nothing out of that v6.
Really?
So why do they have an article about beefing up a V6?
I know that it won't throw out like 300hp, but I bet I
get like 240hp out of it. Same as the stock 350 for my
year. The torque may not be the same. Instead of 350
ft. lbs. maybe like 280-300.
But yes, there is only so much you can do to a V6.
Without NOS anyway. Which I hate. I don't trust
that stuff. Especailly on an emissions controlled
car. I think that NOS is much better for beefed
up V8s that are built for NOS. Cause you know
It will hold it. Of course, I know that there are
all kinds of ways to setup NOS just right for any
car, but that's another topic, which I'm rambling
about right now.
So, I'll will hold my breathe, wait 2-3 years for my bills
to slow down, get a loan, but the crate motor/trans.
with the other stuff, and $10K or so later, BOOM!!!
a 450HP torque monster that will KILL those F^%ing
"Stangs/imports to rest!!!!!!!! *** bless America!!!!

if you can get a 3rd gen V6 to run 14's
you can get a 3rd gen V8 into the 11's
V6's suck......i'm sorry i ever bought one
as soon as i get my Z28 on the road, i'm gonna start buying parts for a TPI V8/ 700R4 swap into my 1991
good luck

V6's do kinda suck, but I love my car! I have A/C, T-tops, tilt wheel, auto ( I'm a lazy F^%K to drive a stick 40 miles a day!)
The only thing that I like about V6 is the engine room! Of course, because V8s go in there as well. I will get this project done sooner or later! I will buy a crate motor/trans. Probably a 383. I think the best small block to buy! The most hp without a supercharger or that gay NOS!!!! ( only WOT to use! So gay!!)
Yes, I've driven in a car with NOS. Yes it's powerful, but still gay!
Need to keep the pressure "up to par" for best results, only use at WOT, need to keep refilling tank(s), on and on and on.......
Anyway, here's my plans for a swap:
Buy a 383 crate motor ( about $4-$5K)
Buy a crate trans. built to hold up to 500hp ( about $1k)
Buy the TPI/harness/ECM ( about $500) Maybe from "Painless"
Have the plenums ported ( I don't know, $100?)
Motor mounts ( junkyard or Ebay)
Rubber or poly part of the mounts $20 local parts store
Radiator w/hoses ( 3-core for a V8) $150 local parts store
A/C compressor, P/S pump, Smog pump, Alt., Crank pulley?,
( about $800)=== May include with crate motor, but depends
where I buy the motor====
Serpentine belt $20 local parts store
Fan/shroud ???? (junkyard maybe)
High flow water pump $150
Headers w/Y-pipe $400
High flow cat. $140 ( Yes, A Cat! Need to pass emissions!)
Flowmaster 3" catback exhaust $350 Stainless ends
Bosch O2 sensor $30? ( local Autozone)
3.73 locker setup ( cheap, from a friend maybe $200)
Retro fit A/C to 134A ----nothing! I'm an Auto mechanic!
Air induction ( probably custom made CAI w/K and N filter)
about $60
Do I need to change the fuel pump?
Total time: anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months
( Of course, depends on spare time, modivation, etc.)
Total cost: anywhere from $8K to about $10K
Total effort from me: about 70%, some help from my friends
and co-workers
Total HP: about 400-450
Total torque: about 400-450
Guessing like mid to high 12's in the quarter mile
Right now my quarter mile is probably like 17's
on a cold morning!!!! lol
That's the beauty of this project, I will be swapping the motor/trans. myself, so I save like probably like $2000-
$3000 in labor alone!!!!!! I assume a local speed shop would
probably take like a week's time to do this ( if just on this car alone all day, everyday!) But probably more like a month.
I know, from experiance, you can swap a motor alone,
exact replacement, on a Camaro, in LESS than a day!
Can take up to about 6-10 hours, depending on experiance.
If done before , if not, maybe day to day and a half.
Shops will charge you like anywhere from 10 hours to
18 hours to replace a motor ( of course, depends on
year, make, model, trans., etc.) That's like over $1000
in labor alone!!!!!!
That "labor money" will be dumped into the entire
suspension/brakes/wheels/tires.
most likely "1992 anniversary"rims w/ 245/50/R16s
Beur brakes in the front
Rears, screw it, leave it stock!!!!( I have drum)
Subframe connectors
front struts/coil springs
rear shocks, trailing arms/panard rod
So, more like about $13,000 for a complete overhaul!!!!
I think it's 100% worth it!!!!

Yeah, No Sh*t! It's a company!
I deal with guys that have Nitrous all day long!!!
There's NOS, Edelbrock, Nitrous Express, etc.
I helped a friend of mine install nitrous, was
done in 1 day!!!! On a 1999 Tacoma pickup
w/4 on the floor 4 banger!!!! I think he uprgraded
the system from 100 shot to 150 shot. He brought
it up to Eping,NH. Now does like high 14s.
Compared to high 17s before, when all stock.
Also added like $2000 in aftermarket stuff on top of
NOS system. Just bolt ons/with Centerforce clutch and
flywheel.

Where will you get a "crate trans" for a grand that will handle "500hp"? I haven't seen any of high quality. Don't forget a torque converter too!
86IROCNJ,
Your right about the crate transmission not worth a grand. I goofed. The one for a grand that's new will only hold like 300HP. Which is still good. But if I want to do 12s, I'll probably spend more like 2-3,000. Yeah, I'll need a different stall converter too. This is getting expensive. In reality, I might have to just settle for a 350 that throws out like 300-350HP. It's like over a grand cheaper. Then I can buy a trans. cheaper, too. Now I'll just do like mid to high 13s, but still fast! I can always add a supercharger to it down the road for like 3 grand. That will pick up another 75-85 HP easy! They have ones made to hold stock 350 motors, so I'll know that when I buy a GM performance crate 350 motor w/high flow heads, it will definitely hold it! So a 350 is still better than a V6 anyday!
And I'm sure I won't regret doing this swap either once I do it!

Like i told you before, save your money and do it right! You will enjoy it more if your car is done the way you really want it. It is expensive as hell too! later
Yeah, your right,
Today, I talked to a guy at work ( 20 years experiance),
says he can build a used V8 trans. from my year, to hold
up to 500HP!!!! Easy!!! He said he can "hook me up" with
the price of rebuilding it too! I definitely want a trans-go shift kit in that bad larry!!! I want neck snapping shifts!!!! So, maybe I will save my money 'til I get the amount that I need for the 383 with a rebuilt trans.
Thanks.

I pretty much have all of my parts except for odds and ends but i will pick those up when i need them! It's an 86 iroc with the 305 tpi and 700r4 with 3.23 posi rear. We will see what kind of trouble i can gett into with it! later
