305 Efi To Carb 383 Help
I am an old member of thirdgen.org from some time ago. I sold my last 3rd gen and have been looking for a new project ever since. My last car was "GOFASTER" the 1992 25th anniversary Chrome Yellow Z28 that pulled 11.8 at sea level with NOS and many many mods. That was on my TPI and L98 if you can believe that. I am looking to get an 1988-1992 RS with a 305 (TPI or TBI does not matter) and ripping that motor out in favor for a 383 stroker with a carb on top of that. Now, I have never done anything like this before, I always stick with the factory set up and race that, but its time for something new if you know what I mean. A few questions are, what happens to the computer (stock) once I pull the motor out and stick in a non-computer needing 383 cid? Do I just jam the plug-ins and never hook anything up to them again? How would I do that with the computer? Other questions I have are not as serious as that one, I will not buy the car if it is something I cannot do on my own. Do I just pull the 305, get my new motor and slap it in, then just get an external fuel pump to help the stock one out and use the old HEI distributor for ignition (with some up grades of course)? Any help out be greatly appericated.... As you can see this sounds easy to me, just work on weekends and nights to get the swap done and I would have a 11 second 3rd gen (with some tranny, traction and rear-end modifications).... Please help...
Basicaly I need advice on what to do with the computer after pulling the stock EFI 305.
Then, do I just ad a external fuel pump for the new carb set up?
Maybe a new distributor from Mallory with a high fire coil box set up...
Run new lines form the old fuel lines to the carb...
What am I missing?
HELP....
PS *** IT FEELS GOOD TO BE BACK ON THE BOARDS AGAIN...

There are a couple of options with regard to the computer. The easiest is to just leave it there and take the bulb out of the SES light. Use the wires you need in the engine compartment (ignition power, tach, oil pressure, engine temp, cooling fan, alternator, etc.), and either trim back the rest or coil & tuck them out of the way. More difficult would be to take out the computer & harness and run new copper for the things you need.
Opinions vary on fuel pump. Many keep the EFI fuel pump in the tank and run a regulator with return line to drop the pressure down to carb levels. The fuel lines themselves don't need to change. Others on the Carb board say take out the in-tank pump, use a mechanical on the engine. If you do that, I'd think you'd also want to take out the factory in-line filter, because it should be on the pressure side of the pump, not the suction side.
What do you mean by "use the old HEI distributor for ignition (with some up grades of course)"? If you said "an old HEI", I'd agree (Jegs has an HEI available right now for $120). But, the HEI off of EFI won't cut it on a non-CC carb'd car.
