blew my engine, need advice on what to do next

i have a 92 z28 with the 305 and i recently threw a rod. the mechanic said he can fix it for 2 grand, but i'm not paying that kind of money to end up with the same thing. so i was thinking about going to the junkyard and buying a 350 from a truck or something and then buy a rebuild kit and a cam and put it all in. should i just go with that? please help, thanks.

You should be able to rebuild a basic flat top 350 with a nice perf hyd cam and bolt on your 305 heads after rebuilding them and installing bigger "350" valves. A little home port job on those heads will help too. All for $2000 or a little less.
Your heads should be "081" castings.

Just make sure your heads aren't junk too. A lot of times after a piston separates from a rod it slams into the head and cracks it. Not so good. When a late model engine dies like that, you generally just throw away everything and start over. Look into some crate engines. GM Performance Parts or SD engines. Just get a short block if you heads are ok. I'd recomend getting some seriously dished pistons unless you wanna run race gas with those heads on a 350 block.

Go with a nice Scoggin Dickey brand new L98 short block for $1135 and run some $700 world class SR torquer heads with a nice cam and you will put out way more hp and still meet the $2000 price tag.

Once again, 58 cc chambers WILL NOT WORK on a 5.7L engine. If you buy new heads get vortec or World sportsman IIs Those are some of the best bang for the buck. If you don't need or want new heads you need to get a 305 short block, or like I said earlier dished pistons to lower the compression ratio.

Hey I'm in the same boat you are man. Here's what I intend on doing. I'm going to buy the 350 "Street Warrior" short block from www.speedomotive.com, they want 1,395 for it, 2 bolt but only 150 bucks to upgrade to 4 bolt. If you buy the balancer and flex plate they'll balance it for you too. (28 bucks for the flexplate and 68 for the balancer). Throwing some Vortec heads on & intake (I'm going to keep my TPI) then a Crane cam kit, 22lb injectors, headers, 3" exhaust system, no cat (no emissions in my area so I can get away with it) Plus I'm gutting the A/C stuff, maybe even heater stuff too but I haven't decided on that yet. If I have to drive it in the winter (which I won't be doing hopefully) I'll be kinda cold. I think I'm roughly looking at about 2,600 dollars, probably more, I'll have to do the math sometime. But, for what I get it'll be worth it.
