sawpped 305- 350 havin starter problems

I just swapped the 305 4 barrel out for a 350 bored .40 over in my 86 firebird. Now the starter is to light for the bigger motor and when the pistons heat up you cant start it you can only start the car when its cold this causes problems if you need to go anywhere and stop the car!!! Ive heard that alot of peoepl acctually switch to ford starters does anyone have any ideas???

starter help

you should not be having problems with the starter turning the motor over. I switched out a 305 for a 350 bored .30 over and compression over 11:1. And the stock starter still started it. If you are having problems make sure the negative battery cable is grounded to the block. If it runs to the frame you must have a ground from the frame to the block. The easiest thing to do is just find a place on the block to ground the cable out. I had a little trouble at first with the motor starting and i thought it was the battery or the charging system. But i found out i had the negative cable grounded to the alternator bracket. This did not work good.I scraped the paint off one of the bolt holes in the head i was not using and bolted it there. I fired up real strong. If that is not the problem. Meaning you have the cable grounded well. Then you can get high torque starters from summit or jegs or maybe from local parts stores. But i know summit and jegs have them.

Sounds like a weak starter or a heat soak problem to me, did you put headers on when you made the swap? Oh yea, not a ford starter but a ford solenoid will work as a remote solenoid, you just need to mount it on the firewall or inner fender(away from the heat) Also look into getting a heat shield of some sort for that starter. Good luck!

Try a bigger ground strap like a 4 gauge. Check all your wiring and grounds. If the problem persists, buy a high torque summit starter. It was $150 and it has 220lbs torque. My engine is 11.5:1 and I have no problms even at 240 degrees.
