has anyone actually put a 89 TPI, wire harness and computer in a 91 or 92 RS

I am trying to finish up my swap over in my 92 RS, I went from a 305 TBI t0 a 350 TPI out of a 89 camaro. I am using the computer and wiring out of the 89. I am hooking up all the wire and there is a couple of places they are different. For instance the two big plugs that are on the drivers side fire wall under the relays, well the 92 wiring as the wiper motor as part of the left plug and the 89 has it part of the right plug. there are a couple of other instances but I don't know if the 89 harness will actually work in a 92. I was wondeering if anyone actually has done this swap over??
If anyone knows how to solve my problem I would appreciate the advice.

John

I just swapped in a 90 engine and harness into my 91 RS. The installation seemed simple and everything hooked up correctly but I had a ground problem. I ended up splicing into the ground on the diagnostic port and directly grounding it. This solved all the problems with the grounding, including the VATS system. As far as the 89 harness goes I'm not sure what problems you will run into. Just keep in mind that a ground could be the culprit should a problem arise. Good luck with the swap and if you have any questions write me an email and I will do my best to help.

Aloha,

Jason

I just swaped an 89 into my 91 all I had to do was add/change a few wires to the c100 connector (engine side)

added a ground wire to C7 of c100
(usage vats gages etc)

added a ground wire to F8 of c100
(usage sir)

connected pin f on the alternator to G8 of c100
(car wouldnt charge without it)

add vss wires to E4 and D4 of c100

removed orande wire (under hood light) from interior harness side (c207 connector pin m) located under dash next to computer. The 89 wiring harness has a ground going to that location and kept causing my accessory fuse to blow as far as i could tell the 89 wiring harness has no under hood light

Is the c100 plug the plug that goes into the connector on the firewall on the drivers side?

How do you pull the pins out of the plug to rearrange them?

thanks

Yes it is. To remove the pins from the c100
connector just pry out the white plastic retainer out
of the side and insert a small screw driver down the
top side of the pin to remove the locking tab and
just pull it out. It may be a little hard to pull out
because of the goop they put in there. I can post
pictures if you want.

OK here is the deal, It is up and running (woohoo) I rewired the C100 connector but ran into a couple of problems...

My battery guage is reading about 12 volts, I tried to pin it the way you said (pin F to G8 on the C100) and it wouldn't start that way. What did you do with the red wire from E6. If you look at the 92 Firewall side of the connector, it is empty. I put it into G4 and the car wanted to start but then quickly died (numerous times). So I put G8 back to G4 and the red wire to G8 and it started right up but my battery guage is reading 12 volts.

Now get this I disconnect the battery to see if the altinator will support the car running, It does and then I go look at the battery guage and it is reading 14 volts. I shut the car off and start it again and it is back to reading 12 volts so I do it again and same outcome. I don't get it???

Lastly what did you do about the window washer?? I took the harness out for the wipers to put back on the 89. The C100 connector (the thin one) has the wiper connectors on it except for the window wash. On the 92 the washer came (I think) from the ECM side of the harness.

I really do appreciate your help with this

Thanks
John

The reason why i connected pin F to G8 was
i needed a 12+ volt signal to the alternator to get it
to charge and that happened to be where it was
connected in the old engine. i dont think it
matters what you connect pin F to as long as it's
a switched 12+ volt source. try connecting pin F
directly to the positive side of the battery to see
if it charges. when i ran mine and it wasnt charging
the voltage would slowly drop and when i drove it
around it would stutter when i reved it up.
the manual says E6 has nothing there (fire wall side)
but i think it might have something to do with the
wipers on the 89 harness. tell me where where it
goes and i will try to help you. as for
the washer mine has the wiper and wash all on the
thin c100 connector and the 89 wiring harness has
the wiper motor control on it and the wash but i just
left them disconected my 92 service manual says the
washer motor should be connected directly to the
wiper motor module. the wiper motor modual is
located on top of the wiper motor. the wires from
the washmotor are dark blue and red, dark blue is
connected to pin E of the wiper motor module and
the red wire is connected to pin D of the module i
can scan a wiring diagram of the wiper/ washer
system if you want.

Ok I finally had a chance to chase the red wire, It runs to the square relay on the drivers side firewall. The 92 wire harness doesn't have this relay. According to the 92 harness you are right pin F from the altinator should run to G8 on the C100 connector. I tried to hook it up again and the car doesn't stay started. The fuel pump comes on after about three seconds when you turn the key but when you start the car it starts for a second and shuts down. You can hear the fuel pump shut off and turn back on after the car dies. Idon't understand why the fuel pump wont stay on after you try to start the car. I swapped the fuel pump relay and that didn't help.

As far as the window wash that is figured out, I chased the red and blue wires and found the plug hiding under some other wires

My other problem involves my fan It won't turn on when it should, I checked the fuse, swapped the relay and jumped the wires to get the fan on (that worked) but now I am stuck and don't know where to look for this problem.

Thanks for the help

John

Just put in the engine and hook everything up . You can even use the same chip as it will be close. You can change it later to optimize it.
