ZZ4 swap
ZZ4 swap
Hello,
Im new to this forum, and have a couple of questions. I am currently driving a 87 Lt, with the stock 2.8L and manual 5 spd.
I want to hold onto the car because it is in great condition, but im not happy with the power it puts out. Im seriously thinking about swapping in the ZZ4 crate (I can get my hands on one for $3000 cdn), backed by a rebuilt turbo 350. Has anyone had done the swap, or know where I can find any information, because I need some detailed info on additional parts, prices etc...
thanks alot for your help

Welcome aboard.
You're basically talking about a V6 to V8 swap. You didn't say anything about emissions, but if that is a factor for you, you're looking at a much larger task.
Look over posts on this forum about V6 to V8 swaps. What you'll find is that so many parts are involved that it's best to have a complete V8 donor car, even if you use a different engine. If you use a TH350, you're complicating things because they are shorter (unless 9" tailshaft), don't have torquearm provisions, etc. Using whatever tranny the donor car has would be a good idea (probably TH700). Moving the front engine mounts on the crossmember is an experience all of its own.
You really have to want to keep this car to make it all worthwhile. I was ignorant when I started mine, but the results are certainly satisfactory - I just spent too much time and money getting to this point (buying a factory V8 car would have been quicker and cheaper).

well,
I dont have to worry about emissions (I'm Canadian eh), but what im really asking is what are the parts I can swap over from the 6 onto the zz4 ie: alternator, etc. and what i will have to buy so I can put a ballpark price together and work out a budget.
thanks again for any help!

None of the brackets will swap over, but things like power steering pump can be used if a V8 bracket and hoses are located. Not sure about the alternator (my V6 was completely different from the V8 alternator).
The best bet is to get all of that stuff from a V8 car. That's why we say it's best to have a V8 donor car for this project.
