cheapest to mod is definitely the 350 but i think the most power with the right amount of cash will definitely come from the 427

From: working at a horse farm, gonna go to somerset county tech. inst. in january.
Car: 87 GMC sierra classic
Engine: fresh 350, minor mods (its been de-emissioned too)
Transmission: professionally re-built 700R4, REALLY hard shifts & bigger clutch packs
Tho its tempting to go with a big block, im gonna say use the 383. If done right, its possible to get high horses out of a little stroker ( I think it was car craft that got 540 HP out of one). Plus, your first gen wieghs in around a hefty 3600 lbs, making it torque needy. You didnt mention if it was going to be a weekend warrior, but if thats its future, then DEFINITELY go with a high output 427. At the same time, keep in mind that a 396, 427, and 454 all weigh the same, so why not go with a 454 if you can get more power out of it, with more ease as well.

An automatic would work... but it would have to be somthing like a built TH350 or TH400. They hold that kinda power.
