455 olds in my 87 CAMARO (305)

My friend has a 455 or a 400 from a 4-4-2 that he is wants to sell. Would it be possible to switch that badboy into my '87 camaro auto 305 carb?

Will this be expensive?

And will it be compatible with the standard computer?

Although it will fit, there's a lot more to doing the swap. Custom exhaust manifold/headers would need to be made (not cheap to do). It won't bolt up to the tranny because it uses a different bolt pattern. I doubt the computer would work with the bigger engine. Much of the wiring and cooling system won't fit without modifications. I'm not sure on the location of the engine mounts.

By the time you're done it would be cheaper to swap in a mild BBC which is almost a straight drop in.

thanks, bye the way...

You have a 454 in a 3rd gen? See that's the motor i really want in my car. How is the swap with one of those? Also, would the 455 fit into a pontiac better (2nd or 3rd gen)? Thanks so much

A second gen Pontiac would be better since they originally came with a Pontiac engine. A third gen Pontiac has a Chev powertrain so swapping in a Pontiac, Olds, Buick or Caddy engine requires a bunch of fabrication work.

A BBC in a third gen isn't hard. It's almost a complete drop in. Do a search through the archives. The question is asked at least once a week.
