Most for the money

After numerous posts, I am still a little confused on what to do to my 82 z28 for some alright power. It has a 305 rebuilt from an 81 chevy van. I have a th 350 trans and 2.73's in the rear. Also have an edlebrock 600 carb. Budget is about $500. Thanks for all the help.

Stock manifolds, not sure if muffler is stock but has a big dent in it so I need a new one anyways because I think that restricts flow. Want to delete the cat. if I can register the car at my uncles house(no emissions).

For $500, I would suggest for you to get headers and a catback exhaust. You could probably get hooker or hedman headers and still have money for a good cat-back system.

I want to get the hedman shorty headers with y pipe, was thinking about 80 series flowmaster muffler, how is it performance wise and I want my car to be pretty loud and noticable. If anyone knows of a better single in/ dual out muffler for about the same price, please let me know. Thanks

Torque converter

I dont think i'll be able to get gears right now, but would a Summit 1,800-2,200 stall torque converter help me launch quicker?

Those 2.73's are not good. You should really invest in some new gears. Why can't you get that right now?

New gears are expensive, and I dont think there are really any thirdgens in the junkyards around here to get a rear from. I see rear ends in the classifieds on this site but they are always to far away from where I live. Maybe i'll eventually find someone selling a rear that lives near me, I hope so.

What would my 82 z28 run with the headman shorty headers to a hooker catback mins the cat.Edelbrock 600 carb. I also dont have airconditioning and probably will be removing other emissions stuff. Have a 350 trans and will hopefully have 3.23's or 3.42's in the rear. Engine is 305 from 81 chevy van but i'm probably going to put on my 416casting heads from the original lg4 which I am going to try and do a porting job on. Also going to gasket match the heads and intake. Engine was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago. So what would I probably run and what kind of power would i make?
Thanks for the help

That amazes me that in IL there are no junkyards that have thirdgens to sell parts from. Even here in SD you can usually get drivetrain parts from junkyards. I would seriously advise calling junkyards in your area to see if you can get a rear end that has posi and even 3:23 or 3:42 gears. Anything would be an improvement on the 2:73 gears you have now and it's an easy swap.

As far as power is concerned, what type of intake and cam are you using? With the mods you've listed, if your using a stock '81 Chevy van cam you might run 15's in the 1/4 mile. Tough to say without knowing cam info

Yes, i think it is the stock 81 chevy van cam. I dont think I'll have money for a cam and springs right now. I want to eventually get a Summit 214/224 .442/.465 with 112 lobe sep. cam with springs to match it,summit 1,800-2,220Rpm stall converter, and edelbrock performer intake. What would I run then and how much hp and tq?
