You will need a new one. The t-5 that came with v8 cars was considered marginal enough that G.M. wouldn't put it behind a 350, the t-5 behind the v6 is smaller than the v8 version.

it will "fit" and "bolt-up"

if thats what you are asking

will it stand the strength of the 350

probably not

I just love ignorant comments.

Since you've got a V6 you're going to need another T-5 anyway to put it behind a V8 due to the different input shaft and different gears. You can get a clutch that will allow you to use the V6 t-5, but the gearing is so different in those you would really have to ask yourself why.

The other aspect of this question is the strength of the T-5. If all you are putting in is a stock replacement or mild 350, drop another T-5 in there and enjoy a 5 speed. If you are going to be building up this engine in the future then definitely go with something else, like the Tremec or Richmond, or a T-56. I'm running a stock '92 T-5 behind my LT4 and havent had any serious problems to date, with over 100K miles on the trans and a lot of racing. So far I've gotten a 2.0 60' on street tires. My synchros are beginning to wear a little bit and every now and then it will grind on the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts. But other than that I've been very impressed with how well its held up.

Car: Looking for an f-body
it may hold

It may hold up, depending on how you drive it and how powerful your engine is. My 82 camaro originally had a 2.8 and 4 speed manual trans and then I swapped in a completely stock lg4 305 into it, just put the v-8 bell housing on it and this 4 speed transmission has held up perfectly over the last 2 years and I drive the **** out of this car. So I say if the motor is completely stock it will hold.

All depends on you, the "daily driver?" or the "slicks or bust" track warrior. I think you could end up driving this back and forth, but you might pay a price if you get leadfoot. Best bet, do what they've said, and go for the T5 V8 setup, or better yet the Tremec or T56. If moneys an issue, use what you got, but dont expect clutch drops, or you'll be droppin $ :nono:

Hey jwright, you dont live in the eastern pa region do ya? I think I have a relative that lives near me. His last name is Wright, I think his first name is josh, but not sure. If it is, I may know where you can get a complete '70 350 cheap/free, if I dont nab it first. ~ Garrett.

There was a reason that T-5 and the 350 weren't paired together from the factory.....

Take their word for it, don't try and find out for yourself...

Like a few others around here, I have done it. By swapping the bellhousing and clutch, I had the T-5 from my 84 2.8L sport coupe behind a 350. It never gave me any problems. Somebody brought up an excellent point - intended usage. For daily driving, you shouldn't have any problems, especially if you're running a non posi rear end. You can't hurt a drivetrain without planting any power. As for more severe duty, they can hold up there as well. There are guys on these boards who've run 12s on T-5s. So, without abuse, they can hold up fine. As far as I'm concerned (assuming you go through with the swap), run the five speed behind the 350. Even if it gives up after a while, it gets you on the road quicker and for less cash. Drive it with the five speed and replace it with something stronger if/when needed.

If you plan on pushin a lot of horses, go with a stronger t5 or t56.

Like Mike said, just use what you got, until it breaks, in that case you can rebuild it, or step up to the bigger tranz.

OEM T-5 transmissions will work with the correct clutch and bellhousing. OEM automatics meant for the V6 cars will not, as the bellhousing is cast into the transmission case.

I dunno.. i have a pretty mild 350 with a V8 T5 behind it, and its holding up pretty well. The synchros are starting to go, but thats probably just the fairly high mileage on it. It been abused from time to time as well, and hasn't had any problems.

So my T5 in my 305 would hold up with a 350? I didnt even know there were 2 versions.

My world Class T5 is holding up to my 406 so far...... if you drive the car with some common sense and no how to drive stick shift it will be just fine..... the problem comes in when you slap on the slicks like the guys said and so hard launches, also these trannys do not like power shifting... make sure the car is in gear and the clutch is out before you get on it... We'll see how my T5 holds up with the new Centerforce Dual Friction clutch this summer

It will hold up, the question is for how long. Drive till it scatters, then replace it!

I've been running a WCT-5 behind a 383 for over a year, and truth be told, im not gentle on my car. Had no problems with it, I also have a CF dual friction clutch. Taken it to the track and ran mid 13's all last season. I'm pushing 450+ gross TQ. Just don't powershift or drop the clutch too often and it'll be fine.

i had a non-WC T5 in my 88 Iroc convertible, it started going when i had just the 355, so when the motor threw 2 rods and gave up, i had the trans completely rebuilt. I then put it back in behind a built 383, within months, i could feel it slightly going once again, i sold the car so i didnt care, not my problem anymore, the clutch was almost gone too. but yeah...the 383 wasnt a weak one... speed-o-motive shortblock, weiend stealth intake manifold, dart heads, billet roller cam, solid roller lifters, 1.6 ratio roller rockers, full msd ingition, billet distributor, edelbrock headers, holey 750 double pumper, pete jackson timing gears.... sold the car for 4500, now im missing it....oh well, ya can always build another...
