LT1 swap almost done, slp header question
several months ago i asked on this forum what headers to buy. i got an overwhelming respose to get slp headers. everyone i heard from told me to get ones for a 92 car, which is what i am putting the 95 LT1 into. well its in and all that is left is wireing, but there is a small delema. the d side header is like a thirtysecond of an inch from the sterring rod. i am sure it will hit when driven. why is this? what can i do? i really dont want to dent the header, the ceramic is sooo pretty. please help. they were REALLY spendy. i have dumped over 5k on this peoject so far, and i dont want to damage my investment.

another option would be grinding a bit off the steerinfg column to provide a little more clearance. but you may not want to do this either.
i dont think that there is much you can do. do not grind a bit of the steering column that should stay untoched it may break. you can either put solid motor mounts in or a small dent in the header. oh yeah one other option new headers. are those longtubes??????

Most people dent the header slightly. You need about ¼" of clearance. Fortunately, motor torque against the mountst moves the header away from the steering.
I would not mess with the steering.... I'm not ready to start pushing up daisies just yet thank you.

If you mark the header where you need clearance, and carefully use something round against the header....a socket and a piece of cardboard come to mind(to prevent using a sharp surface), the ceramic coating should be able to take a slight bit of bending. I had to do that with a set of coated headers, and it worked. If you can get access to the front and back side of the tube, you can even use a press, with a socket on the side you want to indent, and a full surface on the back side(piece of wood, something soft) this will prvent you from having to whack with a hammer. On that side, you can shoot for about an 1/8th inch and be OK next to the steering shaft. Hope that helps.
Don't dent the header. Inside the car under the dash are some bolts that hold the steering column to the cowl of the car. Take those bolts out, grind them out, then actually move the column toward the outside of the car. I had to elongate my holes almost a half an inch or maybe more.
