Yes.

A flat-base open element will smack the hood. You need a dropped-base type.

By flat base do you mean the one that just sits on top of the carb? Does dropped-base mean the one that goes over and around the carb like a stock one?

Basically, that covers it.

The "standard" open element you'll see in the parts stores/speed shops will be flat base.

i have a recessed base style air cleaner, and it had problems clearing the choke (electric), and the air cleaner not clearing the hood with a spacer on top of the carburetor. we cut the spacer down to the shortest possible length, and cut out some of the reenforcement on the hood. everything clears fine now

I put a carbed 350 in that has a vortec edelbrock rpm manifold which I believe sits a little higher than others. With a carbeurator on top there was zero clearance. The very top of the carb barely stuck above the hood line. A 2" cowl hood is on the way right now.

Look for an L69 dual snorkel air cleaner. They were made for the carb cars to fit under the hood AND have cold air induction parts. You can still get these are Year One.
