305 heads better than 882?

Hey i just realized that my engine i swapped had the ****ty *** bull**** 882 heads and was wondering if it would be better for me to swap them with the heads on my carbed 305 i took out. The 305 is an 83 and has 80k on them.

Probably....

In stock form the 305 heads don't flow quite as well, but the 305 heads will give you a whole lot more compression. The 305 heads should be 416 casting. With porting and larger valves, some people claim huge flow numbers out of them.

If your motor has flat-top pistons the CR will be too high. If they're dished, it wll be about perfect.

No, it can still be a good idea. As part of the transformation from 305 heads to 350 heads, put in 1.94" intake valves (1.60" exhaust valves if you're really motivated). Then, unshroud the valves by opening up the chambers around the edges of the valves as part of the porting work. This will increase the chamber volume.

When you install the heads, use thick composition head gaskets to increase the volume even more. You just may end up quite close to the same 9.5:1 CR when you're done.

What is the casting number on the 305 heads? Some are more desireable than others for a budget performacne head swap.

It's likely they'll work great. Fully port them and install larger 1.94x 1.60 valves.
drill and pin the studs. A little chamber unshrouding for the larger valves will get the finished chamber cc right about 61cc's.
Your final cr will not likely be too high because the piston does
not comes all the way to the top. This deck clearance needs
to be accounted for in calculating the final cr.
If this clearance at TDC is around .045" use a .040" gasket.
If its about .025" use a .050" gasket.

In either case your final cr will be less than 10:1.

Do all this, as discribed and you'll see a BIG difference....

The casting number is 416 (the last 3 numbers of the ID number)

They shouldn't be too hard to find, since almost all 82-92 305 powered F-bodies had them, but i'm not sure if the TPI motors had those too, but the 4bbl and the TBI had them, and those are everywere.
