Performance Question?

WHAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A 305 (L03) WITH 10:1 COMPRESSION 350 TPI CAM (FROM A L98), ALUMINUM DUAL PLANE INTAKE, 650 EDELBROCK CARB, HEI DISTRIBUTOR, AND FLOWMASTER EXHAUST? JUST CURIOUS IM ONLY BUILDING A 305 TO GET THIS BACK ON THE ROAD UNTIL I FIND A BIG BLOCK. ANY HELP OR KNOWLEDGE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

PRESS THE LITTLE KEY ON THE LEFT OF THE KEY BOARD MARKED "CAPS LOCK" it'll help everyone here out what heads, thet would be one of the prime factors along with gearing.

why so little?

the 350 tpi has 245hp/345tq i know its a smaller bore/same stroke but why would it be so low? hell most 6 cylinders produce more power than that these days. i honestly think it should be more than that. but hey its only to get it back on the road til i find a big block.

The TBI motor has swirl port heads, with this giant ramp restriction thing in the intake part, the TPI doesn't; the TBI has a 2" manifold outlet, the TPI 2¼"; the TBI has a 2¼" Y-pipe, the TPI has 2¾"; the TBI motor came with 170 HP stock becasue of all its handicaps, and even with the handicap of TPI itself, a 305 TPI manages somewhere in the 200-215 range depending on details.

Horsepower == flow. Pure and simple. If it flows better, it makes more HP. The L03 is one of the poorest flowing motors (along with the LG4) that GM has ever made.

I'd agree, if you still have TBI heads and exhaust, you could put an 1100 Dominator and a Super Victor on that motor, and you'd still only get 200 HP worth of flow through it, tops.

Most modern 6-cylinders have alot less restrictions in the heads, so they FLOW better than the L03 did. That's where HP comes from. HP equals work done per unit time; that equals gasoline molecules burned per unit time; which requires air molecules per unit time; air molecules (in cubic feet) per unit time (minute) can be measured in Cubic Feet Per Minute. Flow.
