pulling out a lt1
Hi guys, My buddy is getting ready to pull the lt1 out of his 93 and swap a new 383. I want to buy this engine for my 89 rs project but I have some questions. First and this might be a dumb question but can you pull the motor from up top like a third gen? Or do you have to take the front subframe and engine out of the bottom? Second this motor has 66,000 miles on it and it runs great but after it warms up the oil pressure drops to the red line and the oil light comes on. Is this most likely a sensor or mechanical problem? He only wants $250.00 for this motor so even with a rebuild would not be out of the question. Also the tranny in my rs is out of a 85 model but it has been professionally rebuilt. Will it work with the lt1?
We just did this a couple weekends ago(pulled a LT1/6 spd and 3.73 rear end for that matter out of a 93 z28). It is possible to pull them out the top but I wouldnt reccomend it. You have to take all of the accessories and intake and tranny off. I was kind of worried about pulling it out of the bottom but it was a lot easier than I thought. Here is a good site. I would save it on a laptop or something and use it as you pull the motor out. He goes over pretty much everything you have to do. Go here and click on engine removal on the left http://ken.lowrance.com/Projects/Hea...CamDefault.htm This is how we did it incluing the concrete blocks under the jackstands. lol. Anyway, there is only 3 bolts on each side that hold the engine crossmember in. You also have to undo the 4 shock tower bolts on each side. The whole suspension just comes down with it. You of course have to undo all of the wiring and lines first.
For 250 what all are you getting? Is the motor he is going to be putting in based on the LT1? If so he is probably keeping all of the wiring, accessories, and computer and stuff. If that is the case it might not be a bad deal, but maybe not the most economical either. That stuff adds up. I just bought a complete one myself including accessories and wiring for 600.
As for the tranny if it is a v8 tranny then it will bolt up.

Thanks for the info.
I'm getting just the long block but the rs already has a tpi system ffrom a previous engine swap. (it was originally a 2.8 mpfi). His 383 is going to be a lt1 also so he'll be keeping all his wiring etc, like you said. The reason I asked about the tranny though is the engine it came from was a 2 piece rear main and the lt1 is a 1 piece main. I'm not sure if the torque convertor is different between the two.

You wont be able to use the tpi intake on the LT1.
As far as the 2 piece vs 1 piece, you will just have to get a matching flexplate. The torque converters are interchangeable as lon. I am not sure, but the torque converters may have a different number of splines for 84 and earlier. I think 84 and earilier are 27 and 85 and up are 30 but I could be wrong.

your right about the spline count as I'm pretty sure 84 was the change over year. I have a complete lt1 intake but now that I think about it I'm not really sure about the optispark.

Damn I didn't even think about the optispark. I'm not sure what I'll do about that but if the bottom end is in good shape and just needs new bearings I'll deal with it when the time comes. How do the guys that go to a carb setup with no computer do it?
