Best Crate or Salvage Engine?
Best Crate or Salvage Engine?
Well, I'll finally "gradiate" (graduate) in about a month, and I can start properly building the 92RS (after I get a Tahoe or Silverado to drive every day). So, I was wondering what's the best crate or salvage motor to replace my tired 305. I don't know a great deal about the various GM smallblocks (e.g. ZZ4, LT1, LS1, and Vette 350s). I'd like to use a GM crate engine, or a salvaged engine with very few miles (e.g. from a wrecked Vette) for dependability. But, I'd like to get something that will be strong enough for a supercharged TPI setup (but probably not nitrous). Also, I'm leaning towards a six-speed manual, if that matters for my smallblock selection. Any suggestions?

First off, there is no "best engine; only what is best for you, which you have to find out on your own. Second, what makes an engine good is the quality of assembly, parts prep, and attention to detail.
So you have to decide what is best for your car and what you want to accomplish.
I will tell you this much...ZL1 is an aluminum big block (to save weight), LS1 is an aluminum small block (to save weight). These engines are very well suited for autox. If you want exceleration and nothing else (1/4 mile), go with the cast iron 350, this will allow you the most options for bolt on power adders and such.

It also depends on you budget. My first choice was the LS1. More expensive, however it suited my needs best.
