383 machine work cost?

Okay, I happely made the decision of not selling my car. My dad just bought a new truck so Im getting his and retiring my 91 rs until I finnish building an engine. I have also made the decision to run a 383 in the camaro since it did wonders in my drag car. I am building this from scratch and already have a 4 bolt block. All I need to know is how much machining cost is to be able to run the 383 stroker crank and 6" rods. any input would help.

Who is gonna build the shortblock? I had my block clearanced while it was being bored .030 over and zero decked, paid an extra 100 for the clearancing, that was money well spent!!!! I clearanced my rods to clear the cam as I put the bottom end together. Not hard to do the rods as usually you only have to do 4 of them. All it comes down to for the rods is removing material with a cut off wheel on a die grinder and then making sure you have at leat .050 between the rod bolt and the cam lobes.

ahhh

383's are overated imo.......

yeah you get some good torque, but you will have a chance of chatisthropic failure if the rod ever hits the cam or block.....

you can make a 500hp 355 as easy as you can make a 500hp 383..

you want to have atleast .100 clearence rod to block and about the same on the cam if possible... the .050 is a minumum barrier because of the thickness of the bearing to provide a safe pad in case of failure...... like a rod knock.....etc

i personally would save the money and build a hardcore 355 ready for anything i can throw at it...... and never worry about clearences and stuff.... hell if the 5.0 boys can squeeze 600hp out of a 347, then surley when can do it with a 355.....

good luck dude and i hope it works out for ya.....

I appreciate the the info your telling me but its nothing I dont know already. Keep in mind I already built one so I know how to do clearances. I am 17 but I do know how to build an engine to which most teens cannot say they can. My dad paid for havin my racing motor machined. This is all my money so I need to know actual machine cost. Im leaning towards the 383 because I have built 2 355s and 1 383. And sadly a 305

I know from experience that the extra money spent on the 383 is pretty well worth it. All I need is some machine work cost.

anyone happen to have a set of 6" rods they would like to sell?

If your dad has the same work done to a previous 383, why don't you ask him? I got a good deal on my machining and paid 200 bucks. Don't forget to notch the base of the block too.

I just finished building my 388 stroker. I used 6" rods and a 4 bolt mains as you have said you are going with.

I went with SRP 11.1 flat top forged pistons.

My machine work costed me around $600. The guy did a great job and fit them tall rods in there nicely.

My dyno resulted in 514 HP on the motor alone with 494 foot lbs of TQ. I am also adding a 200 dual shot of NOS for track use only, so my baby can see easy 10 second slips.

Traction is a drag with that uch power, make sure you get all the right parts to help your 3rd gen stay planted to the ground, other wise all that power just sounds good.

Good luck!

Well I went and talked to the machine shop. The guy who owns it is real good friends with me and my dad. But in this case he didnt cut me a deal at all on it. He usally does with engine parts and stuff.

Machine for 383 includes- (in my case) line hone, bore, balancing, clearanceing (sp) magnaflux, new freeze plugs. $750

Sounds alot to me BUT. This is the good deal he is making me. Total shortblock (crank, 6" rods, Keith Black signature series pistons, cam,) plus all machine work for my block with roller rockers and the works. $1400

Sound good to you? I got the worked vortec heads with new springs and studs so I can run the .550 cam plus the air gap intake that fits these heads.

My dad doesnt want me to keep the car because of how much trouble the stock engine has been. (175000 mile 305) but he said its up to me. I love my car and plan on putting a new heart and sould into her. My baby is about to be able to rape some nice lil vunerable ls1 and lt1s (all we got at our school)
