good deal or no good deal?

i have a chance to buy an 86 z28 w the tpi 305. the motor needs rebuilding ( it's been sitting for *** knows how long ). The body is shot but it also has a 12-bolt rear with 3.73 gears and disk brakes. the guy is asking 1200 for it. He said somebody offered him 700 for the reard end alone. Is it worth looking into?

at first I have to agree with wm_sorg, but check out the rear a little closer. if it is salvageable, and if there is anything else you could part out of the car (injection, wiring...) and if you could get him down a little...

a lot of "ifs" though...

I'd keep the rear and maybe the transmission. If you want to build up the 305 I guess you could. If you part out the TPI equipment and the engine parts, as well as other items on the car you can offset the cost of the project and keep the parts you want for yourself. Get him down to about $900 though.

Keep the rear and the master cylinder. Part out the rest. $900 seems fair to me for that. You'll make your money back and maybe then some if you part it out.

i want to rebuild the tpi and replace my worn out tbi with it i think it would be good to have the whole car so i dont have to search for parts somewhere else. and the rear would be one hell of an upgrade from my stock unit

$700 seems to be more reasonable provided the TPI functions. Good luck.
