engine decision and planning

guys heres the deal I have a 89 camaro Rs with a 2.8 in it. I was thinking of doing a V-8 swap but I can't decide on a motor. Seeing as I live in arkansas we don't have emissions testing here so I am not going to run any emisions and only a carb no EFI. I want around 350 HP but what engine should I use the 305 or the 350. I was thinking of using the 305 because I have heard they get better milaege than a 350. If i get a 350 with a 383 stroker kit what else would I have to use to get 350hp. I have a comp cam 294*solid lift cam and a edelbrock performer air gap intake and if i added the stroker kit with heddman shortie headers would that get me close to 350hp. ANy help and or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey I've been told "there is no replacement for displacement" ( in most cases) so I would suggest going with the 350. You'll probably be glad you did considering you want those kinda hp figures. If your primary concern is gas milage....stick with the 2.8 LOL

gas mileage isn't my primary concern as long as get at least 15-18mpg I am good. I just want my sleeping car to be fun and not so lame. I would settle for 300hp I don't care I want to be able kick some peoples butts for a change. Thanks for the help.

Dayuum your kickin' "no-butt" with that 2.8. Yes do yourself a favor and get rid of it. Personally I think it's all about the set-up. I've seen some pretty "trick" 305 blow lazy 350's. And then again I've seen some pretty "trick" 350's blow away those pretty "trick" 305's. With some research, carefull planning, and quality performance parts, you can put together a nice running 305 which can "kick" some butt. But then again even moreso goes for a 350. But even before you start looking at adding horespower by replacing your engine are you sure your suspension and stock tranny, rear end / diff can handle it?? It's all about how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go!

I just found out that the car originally had a v-8 in it so thats good.As far as the tranny goes I can have my 700-R4 performance rebuilt for only $300 which holds about 450hp.

how much extra horsepower would that 383 stroker kit, comp cam solid cam, edelbrock performer intake, and a set of heddman shortie headers. As far as the engine swap is concerned what is required to have motormounts etc.etc.etc...

I hate to burst your bubble, but that V-6 tranny won't bolt up to a V-8 so you'll have to get one for a V-8. sorry

I know I can still buy a V-8 tranny for the same price and they have been performance built to.

the 350 can get better gas milage then the 305.

the 305 is flat out, not a efficent motor.

by that i mean, you can squeeze more MPG for the same HP level with the 350

and you can easily get more hp with the 350.

given that it costs the same, if not LESS to build a 350, i think the choice is clear..

hey i just joined this great site and saw your quiestion about which motor too choose from and most are saying to go with a 350 there right about no replacement for displacement but i found that u can take a 305 and stroke and bore it, im takeing a engine machineing class at southwest wisconson tech and found out u can make a 335 out of the 305, with a 400 crank and a bore of .040 over, and yes it does make over 300hp and u can have more depending on your choice of valve train, and also if u were too go that route, not only would u have power but u would be doing somthing original, not many have a stroked 305 that makes 300hp!!!
