305 carb to 400
305 carb to 400
I have an 85’ camaro with a carbureted 305 which needs replaced. I have a SBC 400 with a cam (high torque at low rpms unsure exactly what cam) which is also carbureted. I was wondering if I would have problems passing emissions (Denver, CO) if I use all of the emissions control components off of the 305? And, what other problems might I expect to encounter with this swap?
I guess what I'm really wondering is whether or not this swap will be the same as a swap to a 350 or will I have other concerns. The engine is already complete, I'm pulling it out of a 64' Rambler.

It can be done. The carb will handle the engine fairly well w/o issues. Tuning of the secondaries will be in order.
Biggest problem will be exhaust. The 305 exhaust restricts a 305; add a 1/3 more cubes and you've really got restrictions. Good emissions-type headers, high-flow cat & cat back will cure that.
The 305 is most likely an LG4, which also has a restrictive air cleaner. You need a factory-type air cleaner, an open element won't pass muster (although you could put on the original factory piece for the emissions inspection, run the open element the rest of the time). The factory dual-snorkel handles both duties very well.
I get to find out in November if they're okay with all my stuff. I don't anticipate problems, but, you know how those things can go.
