350 into the T/A

Just wanted some opinions/ideas on the parts i should use in my 350. first off, it's a 350 four bolt out of a 77 chevy. I want to keep it streetable, so i'm looking for compression ratio in the 9's (high 8's maybe?). It's going into my 84' Trans Am, and i want to reuse all of the emissions stuff, along with the computer controlled carburetor (after a rebuild) and distributor. As far as emissions, i need to pass visual and snifer. So far, my list includes: .030 over pistons, Crane Powermax cam 2030 or 2040, World Products Sportsman II's or SR Torquer's, edelbrock performer intake, and some headers. This is just my basic list for now.what would be a good cc to go for in the heads? also, is my cam choice a good one, so i can still use my computer controls? Thanks for the help.

I'm using the compucam (hydraulic roller) in a 350 in my 92 RS.

It passes smog in CA as a 305 (with the stock air cleaner for the visual inspection) with a 3" cat, 1-5/8" headers (w/A.I.R.) , performer tbi intake and larger thottle body.

I have never dealt with the computer-quadrajet/computer issue myself, so don't feel qualified to comment on that, but the compucams are designed for computer apps.

In my case, the 2030 cam seems pretty conservative (pulls much harder higher up than the stock cam)and seems to make the computer happy (lots of vacuum signal), though I do have a custom chip in it.

Both the heads you mention are great for mild street motors and should work well in your application. Combustion chamber cc is gonna depend on whether you are running flat top pistons, zero deck hgt, etc.-Rich-

I'm running the 2050 Compucam in a 305, and it works great.

Either of those heads in the 64/67cc version would be fine, although the S/R Torquers would probably be the friendlier of the the two due to port volume. You should seriously consider doing some bowl work, as World leaves them pretty rough (I don't know why - seems it would be easier for them to cast/machine them as bolt-ons, rather than take the reputation hit they do). If you go for the II's, consider the aluminum version as they are delivered a lot cleaner.

Do you currently have the LG4 or L69? If LG4, you won't have the knock sensor, so keep the compression reasonable. Flat-tops with standard 4-valve reliefs, no deck milling (or minimum required for clean-up if necessary) and composition head gaskets should keep it where you need to be. Polished chambers also help reduce pinging, as do aluminum heads.

Personally, I think the GMPP Q-jet EGR intake (comes on ZZ4 crate engines) or the Weiand Action+ are superior to the Performer. But, the Performer won't hurt you any compared to the stock manifold (but probably wouldn't be much better than a port-matched stock manifold on your proposed setup, either).

If you have an LG4 now, that air cleaner is going to be a major flow restriction. Use it for smog inspection if necessary, an open element for other times, but a dual snorkel is highly superior.

I did my last smog inspection/test on a Friday morning, pulled the car into the garage and drained the radiator for the mods. It is due for the next test this November. So, I can't say with 100% certainty that my setup will pass, but I don't think I'm going to have any problems. I'll sure let everybody here know if I do, though!

thanks for all the replies, everyone. i have the l69 and only have one snorkel, but i have the stock hood scoop that lets some more air in. i still have to pick the engine up, so i just made that list as some ideas for a mild street engine, that i would occasionaly take to the strip. any ideas on what stall speed torque converter i should go with?

I'd find some L98 heads and flat-top pistons (with valve releifs) for that 350. A set of 1-5/8" headers (hedman or hooker) would be good too.
