I have a buddy who did the same swap. Only he went from a 2.8 V6 engine, to a true Pontiac 455, in his 85 Firebird.

If he had to do it all over again, I know he would have started from the rear, up.... especially with an original V6 equipped car, cuz he made mangled metal out of the stock drivetrain!

My 2 cents though... hunt for an early 70's SBC (the less mileage the better), one that comes with a tranny (either Turbo 350, or 400), you could find one pretty cheap.

Of course the driveshaft will have to be modified, as well as the rear, but in the long run, you'll be very happy, and will save LOADS of money! If money isn't a concern, find a donor car from the same year.... but with a V8 setup.

Don't worry about less gas mileage, and don't worry about no 'overdrive'.... just drop the motor in, and HAVE FUN! That's what it's all about.....

But to answer y'ur question though LOL;

I'd buy a performance package from Edlelrock, it seriously takes out the guess work. This is if you're going with Carburetion of course....
