Engine swap question
a question about and pontiac and olds
I have bought 2 Firebirds. One is a 1987 and the other is a 1982. Got both for 100.00. The 1987 runs. But the 1982 doesn't, I picked up an 1978 Olds cutlass for 20.00 and it runs. I want to put the motor and tranny in the 1982 firebird.
Will it work???
The Olds has a 350 rocket and 350 tranny. The Firebird had a V6 in it. I am not redoing the cutlass because the body is shot. And the 82 firebird engine is locked up and tranny is bad.
Thanks!

"Work"? You could probably hack things up enough to get it to "work". The tranny will need some way to mount the torque arm, for instance. But nothing really will "work" from a Cutlass to 3rd gen from a bolt-in perspective. To boot, you're going from V6 to V8, which already has mounting parts issues associated with it. Add the differences between the Olds engine and the small block Chevys as the only V8's used by the factory in 3rd gens, you're asking for a boat-load of trouble.
Your best bet for getting your money out of the Cutlass is to part it out. The V6 car is about the same, although you might find someone with a V8 3rd gen with a bad body that would be willing to take your car and go through the pain of a V6 to V8 conversion. If you really want to keep the '82, find a good V6 engine & tranny to put in it; or a donor 3rd gen V8 car that will have the right stuff for putting a V8 in it.
