350 swap problems....
Well I finally got the 350 running today and it is making a weird noise while idling. I can't figure out if the valves are incorrectly lashed or if it is a rod knock. The car while idling sounds a bit like a diesel engine. It makes that kind of cak-a-lak sounds but as I increase the RPMs the sounds seem to go away. When I was building the engine I pumped up the lifters with oil the best I could and then installed everything the proper way and did the valve lashing. Could the lifters have pumped up to full and now the lashing needs to be redone? Also when I was building the bottom end I used Clevite 77 bearings. The crank was not cut so I replaced the old bearings with standard size 350 bearings. There was one problem with some of main bearings though. When inserted into the block they stuck up a bit, like they weren't flush with the engine. This didn't let the main cap sit completely down so I had to shave a little bit off the bearings which tightened up my oil clearances to where they were within spec. Has anyone every expirenced this problem before?
I know it's a monte but anyone care to help my buddy out....he's really down...he used gapless rings.....it's running fine, but he refuses to drive the thing.....apparently it sounds like a diesel engine while idling....rod knock would be VERY noticable though right? and it wouldn't get quieter as the engine reved....i know for a fact that he miced EVERY damn clearance and they were all fine....the pushrods used were from a solid lifter cam...does that matter? He refuses to drive it but it's idling fine and revs fine.....I think he should just drive it and see how it holds up...he wants to tear it down and try to find a problem (though i dont' see why we'd find anything new that we didn't notice when building it).....he's talking about just buying a crate...crazy talk.....should he just drive the damn thing and see if it holds up? I mean...>I haven't personally heard it....but rod knock is REALLY noticable....any help?

The valvetrain is checked and fine....the only guess right now is that the gappless rings and high compression are causing a different sound....a rod knock wouldn't get quieter as the engine revs right?

Sounds like he screwed up the mains. The inserts are supposed to stick up a little so that they compress against each other when the cap is torqued down. If it appeared excessive to him, he should have contacted the manufacturer before doing anything non-reversible to them.

Could it be an octane problem? He is running high compression, like 10.5:1.....could the noise be fuel related? The bottom end was TIGHT and everything measured perfectly when it went it....the engine was plastigaged and all....
