Six To Grate 8

My dad has a 91 bird with a 3.1 v6, but we have a 350 for it. We want the motor to get it to push at least 450hp. We already have a forged crank, and pretty much everything else will be replaced. We will mainly just use the block. We are gonna stroke it to a 383. I suggested the vortec heads for $250 a piece, but im not sure. My uncle is gonna do all head work and block machining. Plus .030 bore. Any suggestions or part numbers would be great.

Thanks Alot

You could go with pro topline heads. They are good for more HP than vortecs.

1.75" headers are an absolute must for that much power, as well as aluminum heads (i'll let others suggest which set) so you can go to about 11:1 compression safely on pump gas. You'll probably want to figure out how to route a set of true dual exhausts too, at least 2.5".

If you can put up with the adjustment routine, I'd suggest solid lifters too, because you will probably need a fairly radical cam to make that much power.

I'd also suggest a good, single plane intake manifold (Edelbrock?) and a 750-800 cfm Holley double pumper carb.

It would probably be a good idea to invest in a good, high performance radiator like one from Be Cool or Griffin, as well as an engine oil cooler.

Oh yea, that reminds me... synthetic engine oil is known to free up a few ft-lbs and hp too

Just my $0.02

If money is not an issue, Id get AFR heads with their 195cc 2.02/1.60 head or the 210cc 2.08/1.60 head starting at around $1200 the pair, fully assembled.

Its hard to beat the vortec heads on price and they are good
from everything I have read.Several magazines have made 400 hp with 350ci engines.
