The 3.4 isn't a direct bolt-in for the 2.8. I'm not sure of all the details (it's been discussed on the V6 forum), but that's going to increase the costs and decrease the chances a shop will want to tackle it.
But, it is a worthwhile undertaking for the hobbiest. You start paying a shop to work on 19-year-old cars, the cost-to-value ratio starts getting ugly.
