TBI to TPI
Okay, I'm going to do that swap some where far away in the future. I know I have to swap fuel lines, fuel pump, wiring harness and of course get a 5.7 TPI engine and I suppose there is differences in radiator and fans too? But now the question is: Do I have to swap a. Chip in to ECU OR b. whole black palstic box which includes all the computer stuff OR c. is burning a new prom enough? I guess option B would be easiest and i probably do that if i can get whole TPI pakage cheap.
You need an ECM from a TPI car. You can't use your old one even with a new PROM. The ECMs are different. You will also either need to pay someone to convert your ECM wiring harness to TPI, or you need a harness from a TPI car. In some model years the ECM and the accessory harness are intertwined together in some areas so you may need to replace both. Oh and you mentioned replacing fuel lines. You do not have to replace the fuel lines coming from or to the gas tank. Just change the fuel pump, and the hard lines coming from the frame rail in the engine compartment to the engine itself. All the lines running under the car to the tank are fine.
Btw, this doesn't even begin to cover what's involved in this swap. I hope you know what you are doing or have help. I've done this swap so I know it's a real pita. Luckily for me I had help from a friend who is a wizard with wiring.
