173 FI or 305 CARB to 350 CARBED Crate ?

I have a 89 v6 MPFI and an 84 Z28 CARBED engine and was wondering if I did a 350 swap into either would I need to replace the entire computer or just the chip?? I'm new to the idea and have been reading up on the posts that appear to have something to do with it, but have not found a solid answer to my specific question....any input would be appreciated..or even if you can just point me to a post or a website. Thanks.

Dave

is the carbed motor computer controlled? my 86 305 was computer controlled, i swapped it to a 362 with a double pumper on top. tore the computer right out. if you have no computer on the 84 then you wont need one for the swap. carbs dont need computers, period. unless you had a computer controlled one like i did just go aftermarket carb and manifold save yourself the stress of computers and wires

you'll need a stand alone ignition system as well. like a 74-79 HEI or something of the like.

you don't NEED an aftermarket ignition. you just need to have a stand alone system like an in cap HEI system for a 74-79 v8. an MSD box will only help down the road with bigger and badder engine upgrades. i will probably need to get one later, but not now, go here for a complete list of my mods to my motor.

Thanks for all the tips...i talked to a GM mechanic at my local chevy dealer and he said that the pre-86 HO 350 GM Crate engine should drop right into my 84 z28 or my 89 RS and I mentioned the whole ignition thing you guys have been talking about and he did say i could do the stand alone, but just getting a box would be better since its a more powerful engine. Thanks for all the posts, I'm actually surprised at what I have gotten for responses....oh and one other question, should I stay with my Z28 or should I put the 350 in my 89 RS w/ttops. I know the v6 to v8 conversion will require more, but i think it would be worth it seeing as how im getting a new tranny anyway and the rear end gears are a higher ration.

Let me know what you think...and anything else u want to put in that would be great too...links, pics, etc....all info helps...ill eventually make a web page and post my progress here.

oh yeah...and if i remove the computer..will that mess with anything? I mean, like the emissions control etc...i would imagine it would, but then again i do not know exactly what the computer controls other than from what u have told me. Im new to this whole upgrade thing and am reading like 40 million articles a day trying to figure out what is the best and safest way to do things.

i don't know a whole lot about emissions, so i can't really help you on that one. if your running an automatic tranny then you will have to get a manual tcc override setup from tci or something similar. allows you to run overdrive without the computer. i still don't see the reason why you NEED an ignition box, cause i don't have anykind of box or computer, or anything. just an HEI distro from my dad's 79 monza, and a super coil. and my motor isn't exactly low output. i am not saying an msd box doesn't help, but i am saying that it is not nessecary for a street motor. don't get me wrong, i am going to aquire a 6Abox soon, just not high on the list o' things to get.
