My 2.8 -> 3.4 swap...

Right now, i am in the middle of swapping my 260,000 mile 2.8 for a brand new 3.4 (bored 30 over with a not so mild cam). My plan was this

3.4L Block
Same heads
Same intake (ported the intake some)
2004r (thinking of keeping 700r4 now)
4.10 (replacing the 3.42's i have now)
Twin turbo (this will be much later)

We've gutted most of the engine bay. Getting ready to pull the 2.8 block on saturday. Was wondering what your thoughts were on my little project. The twin turbo's will be a nice addition and I expect 475+hp afterwards.

I have a few questions. Should I port my heads? I ported the intake and the fuel rail. What size injectors should i use for the 3.4, and where can I find a new wiring harness for everything. I dont want to use the old one, it is worn and brittle. Also, can anyone point out a location for headers? Any other tips or additional information would be helpful. This is my very first project so take it easy one me.

BTW: For those of you who insist on running V8's and think that everyone else should, I'm trying to be different and have fun, not run low 9's at the 1/4.

Thanks!

90% of your questions can be answered in the V6 section.

1) What is your CR going to be?
2) Do you have an adaptor to make the 200-R4 fit the 60* engine?
3) Wiring harness, most likely candidents are
....a) Junkyard
....b) From those who are swapping in a V8 ( or certain other V6's)
4)Ported fuel rail, or the middle intake??
5)Headers are addressed in the V6 forum.

6) Good Luck.

As far as the compression ratio goes, I am not sure. How would I figure that out before I put it all together?

The 2004r will fit the 60* motor by using a V6 case. And by fuel rail, I mean the big aluminum chunk that the injectors fit into. I simply opened the input to match the size fo the line (a recommendation by another forum).

I guess I will look in the V6 section then.

I have done the 2.8 to 3.4 swap, and its fairly easy. We used the 2.8 heads (same as 3.4, but ours were already ported so we used them), intake, timing cover (3.4 doesn't have a timing tab), valve covers (had Fiero ones already), distributor (since 3.4 doesn't have one)and all accessories. At the time we had ported stock exhaust manifolds, but now have PF&E headers (see the V6 forum). Porting the intake is a good idea, hadn't thought about the fuel rail but that makes sense too.
To figure your compression ration, you'll need to know the piston dish/valve relief volume, how deep the piston is in the hole (deck height), the compressed thickness of the head gasket you're using, the volume of the heads (Comp makes a cheap Cc kit)...then plug it all into a formula (don't have it handy, but most piston manufacturers can provide it for you).
For wiring, use a stock harness for the 2.8 you have (call Hawks if you need a replacement...864-855-2694). We're using a TH700R4 (original, but rebuilt and with a Transgo kit) and have had no problems.
As far as turbos, see posts by Doward and Vortexx...they've been working on a single turbo, and from what I understand someone else is working on a production kit, thought its not ready yet. I doubt one of these motors will ever see 475hp though, even wiht turbos. Maybe mid 300s, but thats about it, and thats with high boost. BTW 410s will be too much for a 3.4; 3.73 is plenty. If you're going turbo anytime soon you'll probably be happier with the 3.42s you have now. They don't breathe well enough in the upper RPM ranges for that much gear.
There are tons of posts on this subject in the V6 forum, from me and from Ked85.
