400 crank in a L98 block
400 crank in a L98 block
hey all, a while ago i was thinking of stroking my 350. But due to cost concerns i decided not to. Today i saw in a Buy and Sell, crankshafts for 150$ canadian.
My question is could i buy a 400 crank and install it in my block without fully rebuilding the engine? If so what other parts do i need. Thanks ahead of time.

The crank won't fit without machine work.. the mains are too big to fit in anything but a 400 block without being ground down first. You'll need new pistons too... the bore is right, but the compression height (location of the piston pin) is different unless you have the 400's rods as well.
You'd probably need the 400 balancer too and need a balancing job.

No you cannot.
The 400 crank has main bearings with journals larger than the 350 crank, and will not fit in the block without being turned down and re-surface-hardened.
Also, since the 400's stroke is .27" longer than a 350's, if you were to turn the mains down as mentioned above and just stick it in a 350, the pistons would go 1/2 the stroke farther upwards at TDC than they do now. That would make them stick out the top of the block by somewhere between .100" and 1/8". Obviously they would encounter obstructions as they neared TDC, rendering the motor unserviceable.

You'll need
¤ 383 pistons for the rod length you choose
¤ major rework of the crank as aforementioned
¤ an adapter to use the 2pc. crank in a 1pc. seal block
¤ possible block / pan clearance issues resolved
¤ balance job
by the time you get done with that hassle and time / money spent, you'd be time / money ahead to just save up for the right Callies forged / forged 383 / 396 stroker kit.

If i'm not mistaken(and i may be) have the crank magged and cut the mains to 350 size. You could use the smaller rods from the 400 motor and keep your stock pistons it may work out. you'll have to check to see where the piston is inside the cylinder. If it's colse you'll also have to check for valve interference as well.

The 350 and 400, I'm 99% sure, have the same compression heigh on their pistons, so yes, a 400 crank along with the 400 rods would let you use the stock 350 pistons. You would need to have the main bearing journals ground to the 350 block's size to make it fit, and you'll need the 400's balancer as well, as its unique to the 400, and is different than the 350 balancer.
