350 vs. LT1 vs. LS1

Pro's? Cons? Most importantly, which is most reliable? What are the differences?

I understand that the displacement is the same on all three (assuming you don't have a stroker kit or something) correct?

Regaurdless of power numers the LS1 is hands down the best small block ever produced by the general. If anyone disagrees I suggest you pull out an IC engines and thermo book and do some math. All 3 can make equal power when modded but the LS1 tends to retian a lot of drivabilty at HUGE power levels. By this I mean 500hp with great mileage, and smooth idle. That much power on a Gen I or Gen II block will ususaly result in a lopey idle and less than ideal fuel mileage. The LT1 is just a better version of the Gen I design (minus opti) and the LS1 is a whole new animal that can't be really compiared to its small block fore fathers.

TraviZ,
I think you need to swith your greater than signs around. But we knew what you meant I hope.

It's all relative...

While the LS1 is an AWESOME engine...you can't say it doesn't share anything with it's "forefathers"....quite the contrary, the LS1 is the RESULT of the 265 cubic inch wonder that appeared in 1955.

And while I like the LS1 engine's....there are other things to consider...

$ vs power. While you can mod the crap out of the LS1 it's not cheap....Heck, I've built motors for what LS1 guys spend on a cam kit LOL

As far as driveability, it's all in the tuning. Go ride in a LS1 car with headers, cam, ported heads, bigger TB etc, that HAS NOT been tuned....

Same applies for all engines....

It's ALWAYS...ALWAYS...ALWAYS in the tuning, or the details.

I helped on a LS1 swap into a Cobra kit car last year.

FUN CAR.... good mileage. But it's not exactly his grocery getter either...and mileage wasn't exactly his main priority when doing the swap, it was being different...he always loved the Cobra itself, but he's a GM guy...

Is it fast? Yes...but he's already talking of porting the heads, a bigger cam ( he installed one during the swap ), etc etc...

I'm still waiting on the issue with LS1's on durability and mileage...

The oldest LS1 engine is only what 7 years old?

$ for $, PERFORMANCE wise, the conventional SBC still smokes the competition...always has...abundance of source material makes the aftermarket thrive.

We just dyno'd a 426 ( stroked 400 ) with Edelbrock Pro Flo EFI ( owner's choice... )... it's very streetable, and has enough vacuum for power brakes lol.... it made OVER 500 HP / 500 ft/lbs and there is less money in that engine than most people spend on bolt on's for a LS1 ....

It's also built to take some kind of forced induction....

The Pro Flo EFI could be better, but it still manages 15-18 mpg overall in a OD equipped vehicle.

It's all about how fast you wannna , how you wanna look doing it, and how much you wanna spend...

Yes I agree, the LS1 may be technologically more advanced then the traditional SBC, but its still the youngest of them and aftermarket support isn't as cheap as its counterparts. Some people talk about the ls1 being the next best thing since sliced bread, but the way I see it, it isn't that way yet, great motor but there is still plenty of other options out there.

What can you guys tell me about the LT1? A guy on Chevy Talk said that the LT1 is better, because it's cheaper to mod than the LS1 and better than the 350.

Keep in mind, I don't like carb engines, I'm a fuel injection guy all the way.

How about this question? For the price I'd pay for a used LS1, or LT1, could I build a better 350?
