those running performer rpm cam
I have just built a 355 with the full performer rpm package and I am now reading bad and good things about this cam, I was wondering what you think of you cam, remember this is going into my everyday driver, your input would be greatly appreciated.

From what I have read/heard, it is an "old school" grind as far as ramp angles are concerned, but all that gets me way confused. It is on I think a 110 degree lobe separation angle and will give a quite choppy idle.
I have a set of Performer RPM heads I picked up with very little use (3000 miles, guy wanted a bigger motor) for $500 and I plan to use them on a 10:1 CR 406, several people have advised me against using the Edlebrock cam and to use a more modern (as they call it, but again, this is over my head) Comp or Crane grind.
Interestingly in the Summit catalog they list it (EDL-7102) for $182.95 and they don't mention if that includes lifters- yet Summit lists their own grind (SUM-K1107) with the same duration and lift for $79.95.
It would be interesting to try both a generic cam and a Crane or COmp of an identical spec in the same motor with backed up dyno results to see what the difference really is.

the idle is quite choppy, but you can set it to a pretty low idle compared to other performance cams. i like it.
there was a guy around town that claimed to have a summit version of the performer RPM cam, but if it was, they sound pretty tame compared to the RPM cam.

That's a pitiful cam.
It's identical to the Summit, Elgin, Speed Pro, Melling, etc. etc. etc. cam with the same specs. Just an old generic grind that everybody spits out nowadays. It's not a "Summit version of the Edelbrock cam"; Edelbrock just packages the same grind that you can buy from dozens of other places. They didn't invent it.
If you actually bought it as an Edelbrock, you probably paid too much.
Your car will go faster, use less gas, and be easier to drive with a quality cam in it. A Comp XE274 is a great example of a better cam that doesn't create as much of the "big cam" penalties. Even a XE268 will make more power in most engines.
