624 vs. 081 heads

I have been searching the boards for about an hour now and have not really found an answer.
I would like to get some opinions, I have acquired a L98 and I am judging what heads to use. I have a set of 462624's lying around with a 3 angle valve job and the set of 081's I am currently running on my 305. Which one would be better?

081s by far are better. 624's are just smogger 305/350 76cc headers. Just as bad if not worse than 882s.

I would look for a set of L98 heads. They will perform just as good if not better than the 081's and your CR won't be as high.

The 624 heads are the worst possible heads you could have, with the possible exception of 267 heads with 1.72" intake valves. They are part of the package responsible for 165 HP 350s and 180 HP 400s. Please do your part to erase the collective memory of this disgrace from the face of the planet by smashing them to bits and having them melted down as soon as possible.

The 081s would be good, but only if you port them and have 1.94" intakes installed in them. At that point they would be about the same as your L98 heads would be if you ported those, except with higher compression.

What's wrong with the 083s on the L98?

Well the motor did not come with them, just got a short block. shouldn't the exh. valves be bigger as well?
I will go ahead and have the 624 melted down or thrown of a cliff lol

The exhausts in the 081 are the same size as the ones in your absent 350 heads, 1.5". You could put bigger ones in I suppose; but that would require a good bit of unshrouding in the chamber, otherwise you'll end up with the situation where the edge of the valve is so close to the vertical "wall" of the chamber that no air will be able to pass through the valve and come out around that part of the circumference of the valve, so you'll end up with a net flow decrease. And, I'm not totally sure that with those particular ports, that the larger valve would really help all that much. I have no flow numbers to draw a conclusion from.

You have l98 heads why change??good small chamber without emissions bumps.in fact order a Goodwrench 383 crate engine guess what heads it has on it?only thing holding these engines back is flat top Pistons 11-1 OEM are dish and a cam to match.

I am interested in your response, but can't figure it out. Please make it clearer? Thank you.

He already said when asked, back in 2004, that he didn't have the L98 heads (casting 083 for cast iron or 113 for aluminum). All he has is 624s and 081s.

While I'm glad you searched (I guess?) to find this, the OP has probably moved on in the last 18½ yrs or so.
